Hi
I currently own a Bravo HGT but fancy a coupe (I used to own a 124 Sport). I have been offered a 2.0 16 valve that has a damaged engine. Timing belt slipped and valves hit pistons. Will this be an economical DIY repair or would a replacement engine be needed? Would a Croma Turbo be a simple option and can it be brought up to the same BHP? Are these 16 Turbo even worth repairing or should I look for a better 2.0 20 Valve Turbo? Any idea on what its worth in this condition done 75K?
Thanks for now.

Depends on how much they have offered you the damaged 16v Turbo for if its a reasonable offer and decent condition body work wise then yes it would be worth repairing. All depends on how damaged it is if its just the case of new valves and springs then should be fine.

The 2.0 20v Turbo is the better car but more expensive to repair / service / insure but its slightly cheaper on fuel believe it or not :p.

Nah, for the money you spend on rebuilding, you may have well have bought a 20VT. You could still undertake it as a hobby, but bear in mind for the money you'll spend on the rebuild, you could have bought a mint 16V and a mint left over. :)

i agree, mine's had a £3k engine rebuild from the exact same thing, the current value of the car

Depends on what the condition of the rest of the car is in - and if the person offering is a friend who is likely to advise you if there are any other defects.

Going by market value isn't a good way to decide if its worth doing on these older cars. If its good everywhere else, then go for it. Least you'll know the engine is in best possible condition (y)
