hi guys my 20vt coupe.

strange,. its strong as an ox and really puts u in the seat on boost, however, it boosts from about 2 800 till about 4 800 then platueas but keeps going f**ing fast ,,,,,and then kicks again really hard, alll hell breaks loose from about 5000 till 6 k.

is this how everyones runs, or should i maybe think about a remap and boost control. i dont have a guage either.

It should be a constant battering of boost, torque and power from 2500-3000 RPM right up to 6K, where the standard turbo starts to run out of puff, and will tail off to about .7 bar as it can't provide enough boost at high engine RPM. I'd be getting a boost gauge first of all, cheap, and you can see what's happening. Your EBV may be spiking, causing a see-saw feeling and teh power coming in and out as you describe.

thats fair enough, thanks for that feedback,, its driving me mad coz u get the initial torque steer from 3 k and then it goes and then it pulls across the road again at 5 k again with another hit of it, and in this snow its nealy been written off 3 times in 2 days .. are those halford gauges worth plumbing in just to do the job, everywhere else is shut over xmas?

anyone else on forced vacation from Fck for you-u?

oh and if ur oil seals are fading in your turbo ,, bar the smoke and all that stuff, would it boost spike coz of that? anyone here know of a hybrid selling immediately.. il start another thread

thanks mate, how long do u recon they can run smoking pretty bad, before they need to get changed, funds are a bit tight at the mo to buy it now off ebay for 900 quid, anyone selling a hybrid?

It'll happily run until you can replace it, Just check the oil more often, once a week maybe. It'll be using more oil. Mine's been smoking away since July, Like you funds are a bit tight. Got the Turbo just need to fit it!

geez well. decided id have a look inside, so i spent all freezing morning trying to take off the turbo and the exhaust manifold is cracked and split something stupid. broke an exhaust stud off, and im not very happy, boost was definately spiking something silly,, anyone selling a manifold. standard or aftermarket.
not very happy, timing belt is old as anything, pulled the plugs and there in bad order too, this poor coupe hasnt been looked after at all,. cant decide whether to go the whole way and do some proper overhaul work on it or whether to just put a new manifold and turbo and leave it, what are your guys opinions, its on 108k good compression and everything, and im still looking for a good hybrid if anyone knows someone?
thanks and kind regards jason

Sorry to hear the news.
I guess it depends if you want to keep the car or not.
If you are then do all the work as it will keep going. If not, then do the minimum.
My replacement clutch doesn't seem to bad now.....

If the bodywork is in good condition it's worth doing! The belt is a must as they are under a lot of load and will happily break taking out most of your 20v's and maybe a piston or two in the process.

Stainless steel replacement manifold are available on ebay for about £399. These should withstand cracking much better.

well. stripped out the manifold and turbo, welded the manifold and fitted my replacemnt turbo,,its all good now,, however, now iv got a few dramas. firstly, i fitted a boost gauge finally, and i primed and ran the turbo fine, felt a bit slow to begin with,, then it felt really slow, doesnt put u back in the seat anymore,

so i fitted the boost guage i got for xmas, and hay ho, its only boost to 6-8 psi in 1st and second, and then 8 psi tops in other gears, so its only boosting to 0.6 - 0.7 BAR period, any one got immediate ideas please,,
many thanks, only thing i can think of it maybe the actuator adjuster has been tampered with, and loosened, or the boost solonoid near the battery tray is filthy, can some one explain what the actuator does and how it might affect it thanks

jason

Is it a different turbo? Have took the connectors from the battery terminals and left it half an hour? it could be in limp home mode. Check all rubber intercooler hoses, could be a leak. Are you sure the Manifold is seated correctly, including a fresh gasket? Mine wasn't boosting well when I first got her, turns out it was a combination of a manifold that wasn't tight enough and the ECU had retarded boost as it could see a problem.

If your car is boosting hard after 5,000rpm, then it has been tampered with. The stock turbo is almost spent by 5,500rpm - the power curve is certainly falling away by that point

My guess would be that it has a bleed valve in place of the standard boost control, and that it's set a bit too high

You REALLY need to get a boost gauge connected to see what it's doing, before you kill the engine
