Do you guys have any problems with the Coupe 20VT Garret T28 in UK. In our climate we have to service the Turbo every 1 1/2 - 2 years regardless of the millage. Most of the coupes here have busted Turbo Seal and a massive white smoke coming out from the exhaust. Its funny because this only happen to Fiat Coupes but all the Evos, Skyline and scooby has no such problem.

certainly not a common problem in the uk...a regular oil change is useful to prolong turbo life, must be your climate

I agree with Colin - turbo failures are relatively rare over here on the 20VT.

I can't imagine your climate has a huge effect though. The turbo runs at several hundred degrees so the odd 20 or 30 on the ambient ain't gonna make much difference.

Of course what is very important for a turbo is a good quality oil. I think you really should be using a fully synthetic oil and be changing it at least every six months or 10,000Km - what do you use over there in Malaysia??

Most of coupes here uses selenia racing fully synthetic oil does oil changes every 8,000 to 10,000 km but still the turbo fails. The problem with selenia racing in our weather is it tend to evaporate and we have to top up the oil all the time.

I am using Castrol RS fully synthetic now .... so far its ok and the average engine tempreture is about 80 degrees compared to selenia where the engine tempreture is 90 degrees average.

Almost all of our club members here had busted turbo after 1 1/2 to 2 years of owning the car. So i just serviced and mod my turbo and i know it will fail on me soon.

Do you guys have any comments on colombo techni filter?

The funny thing is the 16V coupe garret T3 has no problem with busted turbo its only on the 20VT. I mean the car is fantastic even tho we have to like spend a lot of cash to fix the turbo.

Ok check this out.... coming home from clubing at about 2 am and the next morning at about 9 am i poped the hoot to see the water level or engine oil level .... the engine is still hot like it was just switched of two hours ago.... ain't that crazy man. that's why i tried taking off the undertray...

I'm using Castrol RS too and my car has done 80,000Km on the same turbo with no problems at all (I realise it's very dangerous to say things like that about the coupe )

Hopefully you will do well with the Castrol RS.

Alright Spunky, fancy seeing you here :)

Out of interest what grade Castrol RS are you using, as there are fews types a 0/30 and 10/60 as I have been using 10/60, car seems good on it less oil consumption too but wondered if it might be better going for the other type?

Cheers

He..he, I get around a bit !

I'm using the 0W 40 (I guess that's what you meant by the 0/30). Got a **** load from Halfords when it was on sale at £22 for 4 litres.

CloverF,

EVO's and Subarus use MHI TD05's in a multitude of sizes, all of which
have larger compressor and turbine housings. Their center shafts make T28 shafts look like toothpicks in comparison. They spin a little bit slower and hence there's a lot less stress on the shaft. That's why they don't suffer the same fate as our T28's do.

Clover what boost are you running afer all your mods?,bet you it`s down to heat and this is destroying the seals.

An old topic, but i've just registered onto site. I have the same problem with the turbo on my coupe; masses of white smoke. Possibly it is to do with the climate. This summer in Dubai av temp 42C. Question ishow do I fix it? send the unit ot the UK?

Are you running a de-cat pipe? The turbo seals likes a bit of back pressure in the exhaust to stop oil weeping into the rotors, usual symtom is loads of smoke after the car has been idling a while.

10W rated oil helps (0W tends to be a bit thin).
