hi
i have a 16vt with a misfire up top end, the compression is down by 15psi on cylinders 3 & 4, i have been advised that it is coke on the inlet valves making them stick.

however

i have just been informed that the lobes on the inlet cam wear badly and this will cause a miss fire

i hope it is the inlet cam as this is a doddle to sort, a fresh grind on the cam for £75 and good as new

can someone advise as to which is the most common.

thanks

Andy

since the compression loss is on 3 and 4 i would think it is the camshaft. the lobes for 3 and 4 get less oil circulaiton when oil pressure drops or oilways are blocked/dirty. also oil pressure issues are common the 16v.

if you take the other idea of dirty valves, what would cause 3 and 4 to lose pressure and not 1 and 2? nothing i can think of (especially since they arent a coiled pair) so camshaft lobe wear looks more likely imo.

rip the shaft out and inspect the lobes, wear is pretty obvious.

didn't know the tipo cams fitted? are they a common modification?

the oil pressure is very strong all the time, it never ever drops below 1/2 way down the guage even when red hot, when driving its at max or just below.

max or just below?! i dont know about you, but none of my cars, even my turbo cars have had oil preasure go THAT high, i think you may want to check the oil ways and clean them out.

in the owners manual it says its fine its where it should be, its on the bay now and going really cheap so put word about for us please folks, thanks
