Well us Brits will be getting it in just a few months.

It's a pretty big change from the usual 500 range, going for the upper classes this time, haha.

Question is though, is it cool?

Uncool.

It's trying too hard to be something it isn't and cashing in on a "cool" name in the process.

what is it trying to be? the grande punto and the others after cashed in on the punto name when they are nothing like the mk1 or mk2, the new 500 cashed in on the old 500 name when its about 10 times the size, so using the same name thing has been going on for years and worked so why change it.

It's trying to be a (giant) 500 for starters. It;s trying to be "cool" by doing so.

I don't think the grande was cashing in on the punto name, for starters the punto name wasn't "cool" or "fashionable". It was Fiats car for the segment, the Grande replaced it in that segment. Yes it was bigger, but they at least made the name fit.

The 500 name is because it became a fashion brand.

The 500, historically is a cheap, basic city car. The remake is not cheap, or basic for that matter, but the fact it harks back to the original looks wise and by todays standards of huge cars is now a small car too, so makes it fine. Then cashing in on the success by making a range of 500's that have bugger all to to with the 500 in either looks (grafting a face onto anything does not count), size or philosophy is a sell out of the Fiat 500 name.

The 500 name, because of the fashion aspect made Fiat think "we'll slap it on everything and it will hopefully sell to the fashion conscious side of the market still

What next, the Fiat rival to the 6 wheeled Merc G Wagon? The 500VI? Maybe a double decker version to rival the Routmaster? The 500DD? They could even do a special edition where all the seats have cupholders and call it the 500 Double D cup :p

They'd all have as much to do with the 500 name as the 500X or 500L (which should have been called the 600 Multipla, and yes i will forever be sore about that being a traditionalist :p)

as long as every single one of the New 500 range, apart from the Arbarth, ends up in the Un-Cool or Seriously Un-Cool bit I will be happy!

they should have thought of a new name. I mean really 500L 7 seater??? F OFF!!!! fiat!!!

the only two versions of the 500 I actually agree with are the twinair and the arbarth. now they are two Aston Cool cars!!!

I'm trying to think of a decent small car that came after the Sei from any marque.

Ford KA?? nope it was horrible in every way.
Lupo??? expesive and characterless and bigger than a Sei.
Smart ForTwo, lets not go there.

have either of you guys been in an Up!???? they are more character void than the Lupo.

I forgot about the twingo, that 155 twingo was actually rather tasty right up to the point you realised it was French and as a result will be as reliable as the British public transport system.

I disagree on the up!, reckon they do have more character than the Lupo, not that it's particularly hard :p

Haven't tried a Lupo gti though, they might have "something" going for them, the rest of the range doesn't.

With regards to the Grande, I'm with mrcinquecento. They called it the Grande Punto because they wanted to highlight the fact it was very spacious inside, and they didn't want it to be seen as just being a cheap runaround, which is the reputation the mk1 and mk2 had, despite being the best superminis you could buy.
