have spent all (well nearly been on here few times ) afternoon (since 4) doing all my media coursework that has to be in and sent off tommorow, and what does my computer do? over heat and ****ing SHUT DOWN! and i hadnt saved any of it! i hate it!! :bang:

oh sh*t. were you using word with the autosave thing selected? what happened before it shut down? did it just die or did an error message come up?

Why didnt you save the work as you went along?

I work on my pc mostly all day so I am in the habbit of saving every time I make a change, computers do have a tendancy to P you off when you least need it.

it just died straight away, i didnt save it because i didnt find any need to, i know my computer over heats, so i kept the fan un-covered, like always, but it still over heated :bang:

Hopefully it has either saved as a temporary document, or auto-saved You should get an option up when you re-open Word.

Ah... how we chuckle in the world of IT support when we get a call like this!!

No help now but as soon as I open a new document I save it, I then save it after every change really, I find autosave to be a little hit and miss. I.e. every 50 words I might save it, throw in a graph or table, saved.

I then do a backup daily to an external HDD and each and every time I plug in my memory stick it is automatically backed up to a folder in my documents.

For future reference I suggest an external HDD, 40gb-250gb, £40-£100 or so. Use second copy and for memory sticks use pen drive manager.

I know it doesn;'t help much now.

That's a right royal pisser mate unfortunately, with computers being the unreliable pieces of s***e that most of them are, the only safe option is to manualy save your work every few mins.

Is there no way of disabling the automatic shutdown feature of your computer in the BIOS? Why does it overheat anyway, is it overclocked, or are the insides clogged with dust?

You need a stable PC, one that doesn't overheat. So I'd suggest getting a better CPU cooler, and making sure your case fans are running happily. If it still struggles with the heat then a new case may be in order.

you can set word to autosave work every 5mins etc.

So what you're saying is that you know your computer has a fault, you haven't got the fault fixed, then when you have a problem (caused by the fault you haven't fixed), you blame the computer!
If someone here said they knew their brakes were worn out, then they had an accident where they ploughed in to the back of another car, so now they hate their car, would they get any sympathy? (Ignore any safety aspects)
