Hello!

I assume some people here have websites they host or whatever.

I've got a query and I'm hoping someone can help. My better half wants a professional looking website where she can sort of, put up writings/pictures, and use it as a job starter (she wants to write basically!). Now, I've looked all over the net, and found a few free webhosts, but I'm struggling.

Obviously she wants a professional looking one, so "name.freehosting.com, doesn't look amazingly professional I feel! Now, I know you don't get something for nothing, but I'm sure there must be some middle ground here or something I'm missing.

Otherwise do people think a blogging platform would be better? Same issue applies though, I don't want tumblr for example.

Failing free - paid hosting. Again, preferably not too expensive, but a domain name and website builder would be swell.

Help, trying to win brownie points!

She managed it with Google Sites in the end while myself and my actual IT careering friend struggled. Talk about overcomplicating things. :(

Noxide it's probably important to know what she wants to write, as this will dictate what sort of site or software is appropriate for what she wants, if all she wants to do is write about her day then investing heavily in a website with all the bells and whistles is probably a bit over kill and a blog or similar would suffice. Many people I l know with businesses now use mostly Facebook and have a fairly basic web presence, so having something more than a blog may still be over kill.

If she wants to write books or novels then twitter is a good place to be and I can point her to a friend of mine who helps would be novelists get their books published.
What I do know from this friend is that if you want to get what you've written read by anyone then you need to really get yourself out on social media and spread yourself far and wide, engaging with the people you want to read your stuff.

AndyRKett - she's doing a weekly blog - as it is Google Sites is working - it'll definitely need something done when she gets a certain amount of posts because it'll be a bit unmanageable.

I'm sure she would love to know about your friend if that's okay, she's trying to use a bit more Twitter-y, and seems to be having some success gaining followers and stuff. It does seem to be every person you know helps!

Focus Owner - Take a look at Google Sites, or one of the main "site building" ones. You could get a domain for free and it's all pretty easy to set up.

If it's blogging then there are some good sites already about you can get up and running on and generally blogging is a post and forget set up so management is never usually too difficult?

My friend works independently helping those who are writing a book (novels only) she helps them with everything from story to publishing doesn't sound like she would be too helpful at the moment for you. Find me on twitter on my usual name and I can point you in her direction and give some hints and tips

Yeah, I think everything contained in one place was the aim, but yeah, an actual blog site will be the better in the long run. But hey, that's me trying to predict how she does it!

She's sent a sample to a few agents, as a ssort of test run and learning the process, I really don't follow parts of the process but just try to help! :') I'll give you a follow, and I'll for sure keep you and your friend in mind. Thank you!

WordPress is considered the dog's bits but I found Wix does a great job and its not costly. You can buy your web domain from them or elsewhere.. Its easier from Wix and similar costs.

This is my website www.chiropractictiverton.co.uk. It would benefit from some video uploads and some more case reviews, but it's dead easy to use and it has a mobile view option so you can see how it responds to smaller screens.
