if lightning has hit the office a blown up the fax machine and blown the front off 2 bt boxes, is the puter dead? fuse has been changed aparently but it still no turn on. puter wasnt on just plugged in, whats the chances that an internal fuse has saved it?

You might be lucky, and it's just a fubarred power socket.

On the 'ick' scale it goes as follows:
1) power lead fuse
2) power lead
3) power supply
4) motherboard
5) cpu

It always seems to take cases like this to get management to pay for £5 a pop surge protectors.

ive not tried any thing yet only got told about it just now an not going up there till i finish my car.

depends on how it was turned off and such

If it was turned off but plugged in, I would say it's taken the poweer supply personally as there is still an active but small current running through it, but depending on the surge, it could of taken the motherboard with it and maybe a few other things...

its a dell, do they have standard psu or an odd shape one?

Suppose it depends if the lightning hit the pc from power cord or modem/network.

Computer PSU might have been blown, good PSU's have good protection and will save the motherboard and other parts cheapy ones kill everything.

Network cards and modems get zapped easily.

If the computer is coming on for a split second then cutting out, pull the modem/network card out and try it.

Depends, I know Optiplex has a funny one. If it's an Inspirion, I think they have a standard one.

They not protect from lightning strike though do they? It will just jump over that won't it (I know it might help )
