ethernet/internet extenders

Currently reading:
ethernet/internet extenders

i want to conect my blu ray player to the internet but my router is upstairs and the other end of the house.
which would be better? a wi-fi extender or the plug in type which use the house's wireing
the player has an ethernet port only.

I've never used one of those Plug in Ethernet over AC power but I'd imagine it would do the job just fine (I'm assuming bandwidth aint an issue?).

Has the player got built in wifi?

the player doesn't have wi fi
really depends what you have already
i have a router that does both wifi and homeplug

good price here
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150039

or(same make as my router)
ZyXEL PLA-401 Twin Pack PowerLine HomePlug AV 200Mbps: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

my router
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/569910
only £25 and means you only need one homeplug to add plus keeping wifi available

i'd need two plug in units, so which ever i use i'll need more plug sockets to add to the ten i'm using downstairs and nine upstairs (off three mains sockets)

my router has wi fi which i use for my phone

I'd go power over lan if you don't plan on going wireless in the future. More reliable and faster.

I wouldn't say more reliable if implemented properly. My server is on wifi and uploads and downloads roughly 500-600gb's a month without missing a beat. I think the key is buying decent hardware.

But if its just basic internet facilitys your after on the player i'd go ethernet over power.

nada, wifi is a support infrastructure - not meant to replace a wired system, a server should be sat on a cat5e/6 link not a wifi link!

I wired up my network using a 10m CAT6 cable - only thing on wifi here is the wii, but everything else is hardwired in - TV, Bluray player, 360, popcorn hour.

not downstairs
replace your router with the one i listed(so it uses the plug your old router did)
then its one upstairs
IIRC you can even get 'plug though' homeplugs so you dont lose the socket

wont be gigabit on cat5 :p

i keep meaning to buy some e/6 to upgrade the wiring in this house. ive even left a tube through the wall in the kitchen so i can run a couple of lines to the garage :D

well i didn't make it to maplins, i had to go to b&q and whilst there noticed they had a network cable starterkit, it comes with 50m cat5e cable,4 3m cat5e patch leads, 4 twin wall sockets and a few other bits, £32-99

would it be possible to run two items from one port on the router? for instance blu ray and pc/tv
