Hi,
I want to try to install the fiat examiner software on a laptop.
I have searched on google and i have found many information.
Some people says that the examiner does not work without the
interface card. Others says that work!

What's truth?

p.s. which cable and hardware i have need?
p.p.s sorry for bad english :(

the examiner smart is basically a low spec touch screen laptop with 400mhz celeron and 128md ram and 10BG hard disk. seriously that is all it is!

the interface used to connect it to the car is the same as any other. if you use an RS232-OBD interface (£10-20 on ebay, search for elm323) with your laptop it should work exactly the same as an examiner once you install the software.

you wont have the VCI CAN and VCI 3pin adapters that come with an examiner, but the VCI CAN adapter used on the smart is just an OBD 16pin socket so your interface will have it already. the VCI 3pin adapter used by the examiner can be made by using 4 lengths of wire to connect the car's 3 pin connector to the 16pin connector on your interface. i have instructions for how to do this in many of my previous threads so do a search.

i dont know about the examiner smart HD version from 2006 onwards. i havent had a chance to play with it yet.

well... with PC+EXAMINERSOFTWARE+ORIGINALCABLE(RS232-OBD)
the system would have to work... exactly?

you have tested this solution?

Hi Jug

Im not a native speaker so Im not sure I got it right. Have you managed to get Examiner Smart (>2006) running? Is it able to do ALL the things that dealers do with their Examiner? You reffered to a previous post in wich you gave instructions on how to modify the a standard interface... would you post a link to it?

Can anyone else confirm that the above mentioned interface would make Examiner work?

Hello all,

I just installed a 'dedicated' laptop with Windows 98 and Examiner 5.5 software. Also installed a modified OBD2 <-> USB cable (modified to also read KWP71 Airbag etc).

Installed it as COM1, however the Examiner software does not want to connect to the motronic of my Alfa 156 GTA or it's airbag module.

Is it possible to use Examiner software with a standard OBD2 cable, or is there something 'special' about the VCI interface?

The cable works fine with Unidiag and Alfadiag software.

Regard
Michel
