OK, well i was asked to post if anything came up so take a look at this for 999 from aldi next thursday:

PS I know it doesn't say CPU speed but assume to be either a P4-M 3.06 or a 3.2, they are the most likely.

Oh and forgot to mention, can't rate mine, my gfs or my sister's gericoms highly enough, amazing value for money although the above deal isn't as good as what we got. Long term result of my purchase has been: Great laptop, downsides: Poor sound (like normal laptop....!) paint finish is poor. Everything else great and WILL be buying from Gericom in the future.

The CPU is a 1.7ghz Centrino. Very quick for a laptop.

Aldi will also have a 160gb USB/Firewire external HDD for £90 which is a great price.

LOL, and already the 160gb drives are on ebay for a lot more! I would buy one but I am too poor now :(

I think the centrino is bananis (spl?) and not dothan though sadly?

Not idea about the Centrino actually is, but seriously faster the rated speed (ghz or whatever) does not actually mean faster/better system.

I have now now found that the PC World laptop is only 256mb of ram and 40gb hard disk.

It's ok having a fast processor but in speed and programme handling it's ram that counts more.

Yeah but 256mb (assuming free slot) is only about £30-40 right? 40gb would be fine if you bought the 160gb external one from Aldi ;)

Ts86; the centrino is a bit of a gimmick really, they make out it's the only chipset to allow you to go wireless, yeah right!

Basically the clock speed isn't as important as it used to be (hence why AMD state the two different clock speeds) - it's how much is done per cycle. - A centrino will keep up with a P4 in all areas but raw power (i.e. encoding MPEG4) but uses less battery and keeps colour. However, the newer ones (Dothan) are starting to last only 2-3 hours anyway because the rest of the laptop is the major power user.

My opinion anyway.

But isn't laptop components more expensive than your PC stuff due to space constraints?

Also the external HD is slower than an internal so kinda defeats the purpose.

This is all coming from a ex laptop user!

Right now i can't imagine using a desktop, the constraints are so high! This is my third laptop and my first decent one - I used a P120 laptop over a P233 desktop - it lacked power but it was so much nicer to use.

But yes, laptop components are a little more expensive, however, i must have the only lappy that uses desktop RAM! hehe ;)

Is the external HDD slower? I am not sure how quick HDD interface is (whatever they use these days) compared with USB2/firewire?
