Given I'm at least 4 miles from the nearest exchange, in the middle of 'nowhere' (I'm 10 miles off a main road down a single track road!) I reckon I've got a damn good result!

VM recently tested the accuracy of about 6 or 7 Broadband internet Speed-test sites and only 2 were anything like accurate with just 1 being correct on a known location. I'll see what info I can find.

Thats the base issue, I was hoping to post the sites tested but it may not be fair to do so....

Speedtests are pointless anyway. To max out a 10mbit+ line you need to be downloading off pretty good servers from what i've found. I usually get to about 600kb/s on a download.

Good point, although I have maxxed out my 100Mbit line once or twice - 12.5MB/s is fun to watch, although it doesn't stay that speed for long.
