I have a 3-4 year old desktop running W2K with two USB slots at the front. In the past when I pop my USB stick in, the computer recognises it as a new drive and I can access it via My Computer.

Recently, for no apparent reason, it no longer works. Tried the slots with another USB stick and also doesn't work. So I tried another plugging in a USB mouse in the same slots, and works perfectly fine.

So I thought the USB sticks were faulty, but when I tried them on a Mac, they work.

I've made no changes to any configuration, and nothing's been changed as far as I know.

Anyone have any ideas why?

I had a similar problem with my g/f's laptop and an external hard-disc - but i cant remeber how i solved it... i'll let you know if i remember!

Any leds lighting up on the sticks?

Tried rear ports and other machines to rule out failure?

Liam

Not anymore - they both definitely flashed previously.

Same thing with the back slots as well (i.e. nothing happens when I plug it in).

All the USB slots definitely "work" (e.g. USB mouse works), but just not for USB drives?

Come on.. think think think! :p

One way to solve it is just buy a new computer - but ditching this one because of "faulty" slots is a little extreme..

Nope - no error messages, no strange pop ups, no response, no nothing..

Plug the device in and go into CP > System > Device Manager

Think they ususally appear under disk drives. If it's there delete it. Unplug the device and restart machine. Plug it back in and hopefully it will auto find and install the drivers again.

Update/Rollback drivers I'd suggest like Liam.

Nothing dodgy about the connectors on the USB ports or Sticks???

Will have a think, because usually, if USB ports are faulty, nothing will work once plugged into them.

common issue if you have a drive mapped to D or E, disconnect those drives in "my computer" and suddenly the usb drive will appear on the list.

Usually the device would still light up to indicate XP has seen it.

Anyway much easier fix to that problem Jug.

CP > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
Right click on pen stick > Change Drive Letter
Select one you ain't using for drive mapping
Saves you disconnecting a drive just to see a pen stick plus it retains the setting in the registry so works everytime.

Thanks guys, I've tried all the suggestions above and nothing seems to work. Main problem is the computer doesn't even recognise the damn thing.

Starting to get really pi$$ed off now

Found a live chat feature on the Lexar site (which I think is a bot anyway), and was given these instructions:

******************************************
Dear Bob, (my name is not Bob?)

Thank you for contacting Lexar

We understand that the Jump Drive is not detected in the computer.

We apologize for the inconvenience encountered while using our products.

Please connect the drive to the rear USB port and remove any USB hub if connected, disconnect all external devices like printers, scanners.
Now go to ‘My computer’ look for a removable disc icon there, if not found then follow the steps below:

2. Right click "My Computer" icon, click on "Properties" and then on 'hardware tab'
3. Then click on "Device Manager" tab.
4. Check whether the lexar JumpDrive is listed under "Disk Drives", if so go to disk management.
Else please check whether you see any unknown device or USB mass storage device under "Other Devices" with a yellow "?" or "!" mark.
5. If found, right click on it and select "un-install”. Close all the windows.
6. Now unplug the drive and restart the computer and plug the drive back to the computer.

Now go to ‘My computer’ look for a removable disc icon there, if not found then follow the steps below:

Drive letter assigning steps:
====================

You must have administrator privileges for your local computer in order to change drive letters under Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

a. Right click on “My Computer” and select “Manage” and then select “Disk Management”
b. Please check whether you see any Disk 0 or Disk 1 there with the capacity equal to jump drive , if so, right click on it assign a drive letter to the partition ,now go to ‘My Computer’ . If there is no option assign drive letter shown then right click on the drive and create a new partition and then assign a drive letter, but by doing so you will lose all the data that was once stored in the drive.

c. Else, if the drive 0 or drive 1 is not listed there then select the drive icon and select Change Drive Letter & Path from the shortcut menu.

d. Click the Edit button.

e. Click “Assign a drive letter” and select the letter you want to use for the drive.

Now go to ‘My Computer’ and look for a removable disc icon there.

Please give us more information,

1. Does the light in the drive flickers while plugging it to the USB port?

2. Does the drive get detected, if so do you get any error messages while trying to access it?

3. Please give us the exact operating system you work the drive on?

4. Also give the model number on the drive, which will be like JD followed by a code number

5. Please try the drive in a different computer and check whether it is detected.

6. What is the make and model of the computer?

7. When and where you have purchased the drive?

If still, not detected then get back to us with the details.

Stuck at step b - its still not detecting the USB drive and light is still not flashing.

Next step is to
  • Get back to them with the requested info, and
  • Try repair Windows 2000.. :bang:

Ok, fixed it by reinstalling Win2K (appeared to be a driver problem), and managed to bring sound back (had been silent for more than 2 years) :)

However, I think I've opened a can of worms, now I'm getting:
  • A Windows Installer message every time I open an MS application, and when clicked on Cancel enough times it goes away
  • And this annoying pop up every few minutes, anyone know what it is or if it is legit?

Heh good old Windows messenger service. Keep forgetting only XP SP2 finally turned this annoying service off without having to manually fix it.

Disabling the Messenger Service
If you don't want your computer to receive pop-up messages via the Messenger Service, you can follow these instructions to disable it on WinXP:
  1. Go to Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools.
  2. Double-click Services.
  3. In the Services panel, select Messenger.
  4. Right-click and select Stop to turn off Messenger.
  5. Right-click and select Properties. (You can also simply double-click Messenger).
  6. From the Startup Type drop-down list, select Disabled.
  7. Click OK.
On Windows NT and Windows 2000, the process for disabling Messenger is similar. Access Services in Administrative Tools and select Disable or Manual as the startup setting in the Properties.

One thing to check would have been that the Removable Storage Service was started.
