Photoshop?

Photoshop?

I still think £515 is relatively cheap for the BEST graphics design package you could buy. Wonder what would be the price if it was a small up-and-coming business?

But a 'lite' version could still be developed, for the mass market - although what would and wouldn't be included would maybe devalue the full package - what is not needed for someone is probably a must for another.

And if too cheap, what about the other 'home' packages. I know Picture It is pretty cheap [got mine OEM as part of Microsoft Works]. Not sure about Paintshop Pro!!! It is all in the marketing - the Citroen C8/Peugeot 807 cost a lot more than the Fiat marque - why? Same car underneath, same R&D involved, same French factory - does the front Fiat badge really cost that less to put on...

All I want is to take 'red' eye out - lol.

Oh and for a proper example:

A pharmaceutical company may spend ~£100m to develop an anti-AIDs drug. Do you agree in them selling this to MEDC companies at the same price as LEDC countries? If so, you could be a cause of millions of deaths this year.

No, you’re right, it’s not a life/death matter, but it uses the same principle that a large R&D cost should mean ripping off the average user despite making a multi-million pound profit.

I can honestly say that if I were the seller of such a drug, I would make it available to those who needed it at the cost they could afford; as long as I could make a profit and research further into medicine etc. the actual amount would be irrelevant. You must remember that the 280 odd million is on top of reinvestment etc. and the share holders take all of this!

I guess this whole matter completely depends on the question of how much a capitalist you are....

just to add I have a student copy of xp pro that i am alowed because i meet the terms of the licence, if it was not available then i would be proubaly be using a copy, so microsoft may not be getting loads of money out of me but they are getting more than they would if they never had a student licence version.
EDIT its not a lite version it same as normal just only costs £60

Another good point - if there was a 'lite' version of Photoshop, I reckon the level of piracy would still be the same - people copy CDs/singles costing under a £10 after all.

I too have XP Pro, a full licenced version [not upgrade because had no original version to upgrade from, although opportunity was there] - BUT I refused to pay PC World prices - I got mine OEM for about £90 [PC World full version about £260], only difference is cardboard box - not much R&D in that!!!!!

Microsoft is a joke - You'd think if they spent a tiny fraction of their profits on R+D it wouldn't crash all the bloody time!

Actually, I find XP Pro very stable, more so than '98. Never yet had to do a system reboot, and it has been running everyday for about 16 hours a day for past month.

Mine too, compare it to 9x and I can't believe I put up with 9x...! How can 3.1/11 be called a OS?! My XP has had 100% uptime for 8-16 hours a day for 2 months except for errors caused by buying a cheapo USB tv tuner which keeps crashing it :(

The thing is, building an OS is a completely different story, it needs so much R&D to support every piece of good/poor hardware, software, security, futureproofing, etc. The basic user shell and running of it compares to as much work required for software like photoshop, office etc. Despite this, we can buy it at a reasonable price. I honestly feel that XP is an excellent price! It's the background parts of it that require a multi-billion pound company to make possible.

lol to Dave,

No, listen to me, I am a law abiding person, of course it is not ok to steal. At no point have I said this. However, I am saying that IMO, they aren't helping themselves by pricing themselves at that level - and just like a anti-AID's drugs manufacturer as before - they are being fairly immorale to all stakeholders but shareholders. Evidence? 1 doller plus returns per year on shares....

You still haven't told me whether you have ANY pirated/borrowed software and/or mp3s/music etc.

Blimey guys now I want to copy your versions of XP, seriously it seems like mine crashes every time I open more than two things (slight exaggeration)

£515?!?! Right, looks like i will be "borrowing" my friend's version for evaluation purposes at least ;)

"Are you saying that if they were a small, struggling company then you wouldnt agree with ripping off their software. However they're not, its just a faceless massive company isn't it - who cares if they loose any revenue?"

What about "yes"? In no-uncertain terms, a larger business can and should be able to sell products more competititively, it is one of the benefits of size (economies of scale).

No, listen to me, I am a law abiding person, of course it is not ok to steal. At no point have I said this.

1) I was joking, I have no use for photoshop and only said it to emphasise the massive cost and how I understand why people do it, even if i don't agree.

2) Again, "yes" is intended as an attack against large companies ripping people off who should be able to sell cheaper but don't just to please their shareholders - against smaller companies who care more for their stakeholders and not just $$$.

I do not, will not and could not support or participate in piracy, on a small or large scale more than videoing from the TV. You still haven't told us whether you have any of what I have asked.
