Any help possible please? (PC related)

Great news! Just put it into a caddy on the old laptop I talked about and Win 98 loads so the HDD's are fine! (well, the one I can try is!) This means ebay for a HDD converter and assume my current one is broken. Would prefer an external USB HDD holder but the widest I can find is 12mm, pity as they are no more than £20 whereas this stupid cheapo converter is £10 approx...!

Anyway, I am very happy and thanks for your assistance, will get all the files copied onto here and backup with CD-RW or DVDs all the time! I wish I had raid 0 (that is the backup method correct?).

No Raid0 is a method of using 2 or more HDs together to basically share the data or split it between the two drives thus making it easier for the drive to read/write data quicker... great for speed but if one HD goes down all data is lost... you can use Raid1 which uses 2 or more HDs to backup mirror the data on each of the drives.. so if one HD dies you can just boot too the other array and carry on ... you woudl then format and intigrate the new formatted drive if it passed tests back into the array... Raid1 is no quicker it is just a great form of data protection.

info on all forms of raid http://www.acnc.com/raid.html

I use Raid0 for speed but backup important info on a 3rd spare HD and CD.. one thing to remember you will need a motherboard which is has onboard raid or a raid controller card to use raid.

Hi,

I use RAID0 as well [got an Aopen motherboard, choice of Intel and Promise controllers - I use Intel]. I know I should really install a spare hard-drive, but only thing of major importance are photos, which I burn onto CD-Rs. I may still get another cheap drive and bung it in on a spare port - got sooo much space in the case!

I also defrag the disk regularly, which hopefully helps!

Cheers for the info, not looked into raid before and obviously got confused between Raid 1 and 0. I won't get it, my laptop doesn't support it/two HDDs. I just love the idea of constant backing up in that way - I guess my school work isn't important enough to warrent it but if I had lost all my files (which might still be possible, awaiting delivery of new converter from ebay), it would knock my revision plans back a lot!

I primarily installed RAID0 for speed - two Western Digital SATA-150 120Gb HDDs working as one, so quick read/write access. You actually lose a bit, I presume through drive mapping, and virtual drive only 223Gb......

I am jealous, my lappy only has 60gb although I have my eyes on a USB2/firewire 120GB drive if I ever win the lottery lol. If I am ever to fill up 60gb, I guess I should start using the DVD burner in it!

Those external HDs are good - I think Lacie does one. A neighbour has one, and swears by it.

I like a few of them from ebuyer, cost about £1 per gig from 80gb upwards, no one can match that sort of storage cost! Don't need one right now however!

I just got the laptop HDD converter (a MUCH better one this time, nothing soldered etc. to go wrong, just a cable with modifications down it. Plug onto IDE 2 on motherboard, laptop HDD as master, booted and noticed first time, now copying over my files from this HDD! Yay!

Thanks for the help.

Excellent news!

I must admit, this PC I am using now is first one I have ever built. I always had some knowledge, and always wanted to do it, so took the plunge. Actually bought a Haynes manual 'Build Your Own PC', lol. It took me longer sourcing all the bits in at the right price and spec, primarily used eBuyer, Dabs and Scan.

Best thing is, I now know this PC inside out!!!

My desktop I am using to transfer the files was my old P233, the poor thing is completely ruined inside! I have removed the CD-ROM, the floppy isn't connected, all wires everywhere :( I have had to have it like this just because of allt he fiddling I do on the inside. I have never built my own but I think you can tell I know a moderate amount about PC's - I could probably build one.

Now sitting here, I am wishing that since having about 8 HDD's, I should have used a MUCH better system of sorting out my files :(!!!!!
