What cam timing was used in the abarth 903cc type engine as used in fiat 600's etc.Was thinking of getting a cam ground for an 899cc cinq, and was looking for a starting point for reference.

Not wanting to tell you what to do, but a ground cam is going to cost more than the car is probably worth. I would suggest a Sporting as a starting point, or an engine from the 1108 or 1242. Both more modern engines and a better starting point for both power and reliability.

But in answer to your question, not sure whether the old Abarth engines are even the same type as your 899 engine, so no point using those cams as a starting point. Also lift and duration are just two figures, which are pretty meaningless when you are getting a cam ground to a new profile. What you have to do is speak to whoever is going to do the re-grind and discuss with them what you want. They will give you several options and will also tell you the price. The only people to talk to about cam profiles are speciailst cam manfacturing companies. They will need details of what you want the car for, what driving characteristics you want. And if you do get the cam re-ground you really need a vernier pulley to set the timing right.

Guy Croft is very 'anti' getting cams re-ground. His reasons are detailed on his site.

And as for asking about geometry, I am sure he will advise you to talk to a cam profiler direct.

Yeah, but he may have some general ideas/knowledge/sources of info about what works with that motor.

The other place to try is http://www.abarth-gmr.be/new/ although guy moerenhout, it seems, is in hospital having a hip replaced (get well soon).
