Hello,

My 899cc 90k cinq likes a smoke on startup, soon clears, the car runs fine, oil consumption is very little so i'm thinking worn out valve seals.

Has anyone out there ever replaced them without taking the head off ? I hear you can connect a compressor to a hollowed out spark plug and force air into the cylinder, the compressed air stops the valves pushing into the cylinder when the seal is pushed on.

cheers.

I've seen it done on an A series mini engine that way but compressing the springs to get the collets off was done with a specially made levery thing.
Surely it's not that difficult to just whip the head off to do em as it's an ohv.

An old trick is to put some cord through plug hole at bdc and then turn motor to tdc.

valves stay up! et voila!! (can't say will work on 899 or fire)

Dont bother trying to do half the job.

Take the head off, do the valve guides, seals, lap the valves and fit new head gasket.

Then enjoy in the knowledge that you have many more miles of smiles....
