Petrol Gushes out when I open the fuel cap to fill up!

I have a 1996 899cc Cinquecento - with just 25000 miles on the clock! and over the last month everytime I open the Fuel cap to fill up, I get gushed by Petrol and quite a lot of it! and for the last 7 months or so, when driving sometimes I get a strong wiff of petrol. It has had a service 6 months ago and it flew through [apparantly] - Does anyone have/had the same problem? Or could someone advise on what they think the problem may be?

P.S I also feel that the car can be quite sluglish sometimes, but its my first car and it is only a 899cc! but maybe this is related to the problem...

could be normal as mine does that aswell,

maybe a worn out cat on the exhaust,

maybe was always there you just didnt notice?

You mean fuel comes out of the filler cap...blocked breather.

Also some people seem to think the system should be de-pressurised, adn there should be a small hole in th e filler cap.

Mine doesn't have a hole and builds up pressure and I don't seem to think its a problem, but you could also try making a very small hole in the filler cap, talking .5mm or less here.

It a blocked breather, nothing to do with cats or anything else exhaust wise.

Have a feel up the offside front of the tank and make sure the convoluted pipe isn't kinked.

lol i didnt read the part about fuel splashing out the filler ,i just saw the "smell of petrol " part and narrowed it down.....

oo, mine makes a 'cork out of a bottle' effect when I open the cap. I'll feel up my car too...
