my daughters car decided it was'nt going to play any more.have'nt driven it so can't say what it feels like gearbox wise, but do know it sounds like a wheel bearing breaking up,except it is'nt as i've checked them and the cv joints.if any advice as to the problem indicates gearbox removal, how do i go about it.i'm reasonably mechanically minded, and used to take bikes apart, but never a car gearbox...any help would be greatly apreciated:)

it's got oil...well it did until i spilled it all over me drive taking the driveshaft off,tho it had recently started leaking.can't get drain plug undone.....b*gger:D

OK, if you have ruled out everything else, it leaves the clutch and the gearbox. The boxes are usually ok unless they loose oil. Clutches are a diferent matter though.

Whatever it is, box needs to come out. If you've got the shafts off you are more than halfway there. The engine needs a support as the gearbox has two of the three mounts on, so either, beg, steal or borrow a skyhook, or support on a spare jack from underneath.

Remove the linkage, undo and drop the box out.

Cheers

thanks for that.i've got axle stands, gert big jack and a commercial grade engine hoist, reckon it could lift the whole car,so it should be man enough(y)
