i was having a peek in my car, and pulled out the air vents above the heater control panel, found a bit of a space in there? i went to halfords to try and measure to see if a 13.5 cm component speaker would fit in there, when surface mounted in the dash. has anyone tried this already? it was reather difficult to measure, so i want to be sure it is right before i hack up my dashboard.
i drive a seicento, and intend to fit infinity 13.5s (only one in the dash, the other will be elsewhere) dont think theres much more to know
thanks

Dunno, but check the depth. I fitted some 10cm uprated, and they foul on the body at the back. Had to do a little cutting to get them in.

Think it will be a nightmare with larger ones. Just stick them in the doors if i were you, or just get good 10's and a sub in the boot too fill them out.

do u have any pics of them fitted?
thanks

Cutting of the sound damping on the body ;) behind the speaker, and only very slightly. From the front, they look stock, unless the light is on when you can see the titanium tweeter sitting in the middle.

Just a word of caution about something you may have not taken into consideration :)

/edit, pic of sub is on forum in ICE if you want me to dig it up?

hmm i think ive given you the wrong idea by what i meant! lol, but i understand what youve done in your car, took me a while to realize we are on different wavelengths... haha
ill just be a min and ill fabricate a little diagram pic thing... lol
thanks

here we go, this is what i was meaning

there seems to be enough vertical space for the depth of the speaker. but doesnt the duct for the vents curve down before it impedes in this space, well i think it does
...

Not sure, I wouldn't imagine it leaves enough room behind there TBH.

ill get the torch and tape measure out again and try to work out the volume in there, when i measured before i didnt properly consider the space the used up my the black plastic feed to the vent....

another idea would be to reverse mount it, would be quite trick lol

Could do, you'd need a nice looking speaker though, just any old one won't do.

Ah, they are also usually closed design, so that area would need to be air tight-ish. Fine if you leave the air ducts sealed, otherwise, they may not work properly.

TBH, unless you are fitting a 5.1 setup, a big speaker in the middle will look crap, sound crap and be a pita to fit.

Trust me, you don't need a speaker there to get a decent sound, in fact all i think it will do is harm the sound.

i system im planning on getting is sub (in the boot obv), 6x9s in parcel shelf, the tweeters in the original speaker bays in the front, one of the mids in the dash like in my diag, and the other mid in a centre console box im gonna make that will take my ipod and the xovers aswell

TBH its a pretty ingenious idea and never done before to a UK car however if it doesnt work, you are left with a hole in the dash! Its not something i would wish to try

I cant anyway as i have a rev counter in that space :p

OH NO!!!! That is possibly the worst ICE setup you could have.

You will have so much distortion with with so much sound trying to break it in such a little space.

anyway, went to measure the space, in total its 17cm deep from the furthest limit at the back to the front of the air vent. and its plenty wide enough and deep enough. the air duct, i dont think will cause a problem.

half of the 17cm is where the centre of the speaker will be, and this coincides with the bumps and curvature of the dash. so in theory, the speaker will fit in the space available...

comments???

thanks

i hope your being sarcastic  !!!

Nope that is not a particularly recommended setup especially in a cento, search the forum or PM chaos and listen to the backlash and qoute the planned use of a sub and 6x9's!

As said earlier, you are left with a big hole if it goes pear-shaped, you are a braver man than me
