Technical My fan doesnt work!

right... i ran my car upto the 110degrees mark today and decided to stop and check to see if the fan came on. popped the bonnet and stood and watched for about 5 mins and the fan didnt come on once even tho the temp was just outside the red.

Ive only ever noticed the fan come on once before and never since. anyone any ideas what i could look at? could be a loose connection to the fan etc or something like that but any other ideas?

airlock, dodgy fan and / or switch, blocked radiator, loss of pressure somewhere, faulty thermostat.

airlock? Will check the fan for dodgy connections and so on soon.. well in a min actually. how can i tell if the radiator is blocked? Also i think my coolant bottle cap has a slight leak in it. im getting the one off ghostWKDs write off cinq. but surly if the meter in the dash knows the car is really hot then the fan should turn on regardless of lack of presure?

right... ive just let it sit there and run up again to see if the fan does defiantly come on or not and it did for about 1 second when it got to around 110 degrees. there was water leaking out of the coolant cap (only happens when the car gets very hot) so i presume this is where the loss of presure is. Hopefully ghostWKDs cap will sort the prob (provided his isnt faulty too!)

ive had that problem, the seal on the cap perished so it was gushing all over the engine bay, new cap bout £3.50

the seal looks fine tho but obviosuly isnt. where can i get the cap from? i havent ever seen a fiat dealer around here...

halfrauds have them, but when i looked the only one they had was £8, i thought that was a bit much so went down the scrappy cus i needed some other bits too and they charged me a £5 for that and a wiper motor

just been upto my local fiat place (not very far actually.. a glyn hopkin place) and there comp said they had 1 but she couldnt find it so they have ordered me one and i can get it on friday. £3.67

Also, are the caps for the sporting and the normal cinq the same? i forgot to mention i had the sporting [:0]

well me and arc have come to the conclusion that its probably the fan switch which is £8ish from fiat but is an arse to fit!...

Might see if they have any when i go to collect the radiator cap.

I've just had just about my whole cooling system replaced this week. seems to have sorted mine out. Expensive job though

im just hopin it aint the fan thats buggered cause thats £60! i dont even wanna know what the radiator is!... although it might be a good idea to do the radiator too...

but ill try the cheap stuff first

the fan does spin up when its told to... which is for 2 seconds when it hits 110 degrees so in theory, the fan still works.

could be the fan switch?? I'm not sure but I'm sure some of the Cinq Techies could answer that for ya

yeah thats what me and arc concluded. gonna pick one up tomorra at Glyn Hopkin when i goto get my new radiator cap... provided they have them that is.

ah nope i aint yet... is the fan switch the black thing that 2 wires go into on the right of the radiator? (if the car is infront of you and you are looking towards the back from the front) Its bolted on with one big bolt. its the only thing i could think it was. If its this then i wont need to remove the bumper to do it as i can get my hands down to it.

got the radiator cap today.. yay! it doesnt leak water or presure no more at full temp. Also, i realised today that the fan actually only comes on when the car goes over 110 degrees mark. mayber this was something the previous owner altered? I dont know.

ANyway, I ordered a new fan switch which will be in on tueday.

I then had to play musical cars in the car park. Its impossible to get out of that place...

Fan should come on at about 90'c on the gauge.

What does it run at generally, when not stuck still?

well if u just turn it on and leave it, it will go upto 110 and just stay there as the fan stops it going any higher. When driving around it usualy sits at around 80-90degrees
