sitting outside in my car today i put hand brake down, took it out of gear and tried to push it. To my astonishment the little car didn't budge, i looked at my scrawny legs and realised it wasn't them that was at fault.

i got out and tried pushing from the back. but with no avail, i then started her up and tried to pull off real slow, and there was some resistance as if somthing was holding me back, although there wasnt a sound i could tell it was from the back brake. i havent driven her for about a week and now i find the brake is sticking a little. does anyone have any help for me as im new to this place and highly appriciate all your help :D thanks alot guys

I can see 4 possibilities:

1. The drums and brakes have got very wet and partially seized together. Driving the car (relatively) slowly and left foot braking should remove that in no time.

2. The handbrake cable (unlikely) or the actuating elbows (likely) have seized on. You'll likely be able to tell by looking at how the spring at the hub end of the cable reacts to handbrake on and off. You may be able to push the brake off by pushing against the elbow with a srewdriver of whopping the screwdriver with a mallet. (Brakes off, spring extended). If this is the case, strip out until you can remove the pivot elbow, dunk it in WD40 and work it until it becomes really sloppy then wipe off the WD40 and work coppaslip into the pivot.

3. The springs inside the hub -- the brake springs -- have become weak. Replace. Use a flat head screwdriver with a V cut in it. Be careful: they are very strong.

4. The slave cylinders have developed a fault. Replace as a pair.

Of the lot, 2 is the most likely IMHO.

Good luck!;)

Press it again and again. It should trigger eventually.

But if it doesnt after another 50 goes just give up, theres a small connection in the back which has popped out of place and will stop the trip counter resetting, mines not worked for ages, it doesnt affect the odometer at all though, You can get in to fix it but to me it sounded like way too much hassle.

aww sh!te :( i really wanted that to work :(

never mind i guess i have to live with it

I can beat that. On the "family" Cinquecento currently SORN awaiting my son passing his test:

1 Both rear brake back plates corroded right through

2 Both handbrake levers seized

3 Hand brake cable dodgy

4 Brake shoes replaced as would be false economy not to do so after all the other work

Good job I did it all myself as parts alone around £200 on a car not worth more than £400 at best. Still, it is more a family heirloom than a car so has to be preserved.

doctorchris,

you cant beat me lol me and rallycinq have had to (and still are) replace 1x caliper,2 sezied wheel cylinders,a whole new set of shoes,a handbrake cable,2 sezied pivot arms,2 seized drums, and 2 corroded and snapped brake pipes, and a whole new shoe fitting kit,

cant beat that ;)

all that cost me £150ish for parts,

but then again my car is a bit of a nightmare i may aswell rip everything out and start from the ground up coz so far ive done:

Lowered £67,new sportex backbox £115,new interior £100,new alloys £130,painted dash £20,new aerial £5,new alternator to get fitted £5,changed all the door locks free ,fixed the brake lights, free

still to do:

replace windscreen £45,replace centre section of exhaust £35,trace a slight oil leak, fit new bulbs, touch up the paint work, get new bonnet £70 ,fix front bumper and mesh it,

ive spent about £600 so far on parts :bang:
