Hi Guys... im having a few problems with my Chink! the car is a 1994 Fiat Cinquecento 899cc (L Plate)

And the first of the problems, thats more of a niggle I think more than a problem... its my Speedo... I can hear a clicking as im speeding up and slowing down and it seemed to stop on 45mph at one point for about 10 seconds before catching up @ 55mph... now as I got along a bit more is stopped for a bit but still at lower speeds its doing the same things... the needle itself is also wobbling somewhat...

Next problem is a gearbox issue... and is mainly 5th gear, doesnt happen in any other gear really... basically I lower my clutch from 4th as I get to about 50... and try to knock it up into fith and alot of the time it just doesnt want to go into gear. My dad told me to feel it in a bit more so I have to keep my clutch down longer than I would like... my uncle says it could be a problem with the rods or the gearbox oil needs topping up.. but I just wanted a few oppinions on that...

Last little incling is a whistling I hear at higher speed after shifting into 5th.. and as I hit 60 and 70 mph it can get really loud.. dad says its the turbo (lol) but he honestley doesnt know what it is..

Thoughts/Oppinions all?

It seems to come from the centre of the car... more around where the driveshaft/gearbox area... My uncle said it could be related to my sticking gears.. the fact that the gearbox probably needs oiling a bit... ive gotta get it booked in when I get paid as ive gotta do my test in that car on the 18th of August..

Wobbly spedo arm, if not crazy, is quite normal, the noise however isn't. As Custard Boy said, the cable could be wearing, need lubricating, or have been dislogdged/displaced and be cattching on its housing.

As a temporary meassure for the gearbox, try to double de-clutch. Thats not the solution though. Top up, or refill the oil, but if the whine is from the box, it could be several things, all of which i have no expereicnce ;)

It prob not the gearing itself, as 5th will prob be least worn and abused. as stated, it cold be the linkage.

Good luck anyway,

Kristian

Aye, A couple of people have advised me that the cable and the rods probably need re-adjusting.. but the oil should be a cheap Garage job..

Oh, if its for a test....don't double de-clutch, i doubt they will appreciate it

Kristian

times are a changing I took my driving test (20 years ago) in my Grandads pre war (2nd world war for you youngsters) MG which had non sincro gearbox there was no option to but to double de-clutch

I think the fact that i managed to drive it at all impressed the instructor enough to pass me also all he kept saying was that his uncle had one when he was a kid and he went everwhere in it.

It is not a bad thing I have completed Police driving courses, have done VIP driving course and they teach double de-clutching as a matter of course

I must admit I still double de-clutch today especially going down the gear box if you get it right there is no smoother way of changing gear
