I am about to replace the gearbox (very kindly donated by Rallycinq (y) ) and clutch on my sons '94 Cinq and have been reading up on the forum and Haynes Manual to make sure I've got all the tools I need.

Only thing (I think) I'm going to have to get is the ball joint splitter tool to get the hub carriers out.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the correct type to get ?

The one in the Haynes Manual doesn't look much like the ones on a google 'image search' which look like impact / fork type splitters or scissor type splitters so before I get the wrong thing it would be appreciated if anyone could confirm the make and model of splitter (if there is such a thing) that will work on the cinq.

Thanks in advance.

you want the whack  type as in my experience you cant get in with the screw down type

It is possible to remove the gearbox without undoing the CV joint. There is enough play in the driverhsaft to slide if out on the gearbox end with the other end still assembled.

But you should be able to pick them up from any car tool stop, halfords sell them i know. IIRC they are not very expensive.

This is the one I have

You can also buy one like this

EDIT: custard I managed to get in after a bit of struggling with it.

Doing it without splitting the joint is the way to do it if you can.

Split it and you'll probably find that the old nut won't go on anymore, that the engineer's merchant where you'd buy the 40p nut is shut but the motor factor where you can buy the new joint (got to buy a pair for £16 or so) is open. Either take the nut off the new joint, or fit the new joint and get the tracking done............(n)

Of all the splitters available, I prefer the screw-in/lever type. I'm pretty sure they'll be fine on a cinq: I remember using one on a mini on the top "storey" of a scrapyard in Chester famous for piling cars 3 high. :yum:

I tried taking the hub balljoints off my Cinq using a whack type and had to resort to the screw type.

Or, fingers, split the joint with the nut still on the joint (just on its last bit of thread) to stop mauling the end of the thread. But you'll need to split the track rod end joints anyway...

Best way I found to do, was to use D's method and also free up the opposite end of the driveshaft (from the gearbox) - theres maybe 4 or 3 10mm bolts that secure a flange :p (heehee) in place that pulls free from the gearbox. You'll need to cover up the eng of the shaft, but thats no bother. Then the hub carrier and driveshaft will swing away easily.
