General rear drum brakes with pics question

right been doing the left rear drum brake today as it was stuck. now ive got the cover off (broke a clip in the process)

looked at the apd things and they look in good nick to me, everything does, apart from one thing

pics of rear drum brakes (look really clean to me, from other threads ive read) and the pad things look new, what do you lot think?

and now the thing im confused about, the pad thing dont sit all the way in where the piston groove is, yet the other side does is this right?

push the shoes in and they will.
the friction material on the shoes is a bit low.you didnt have to take the hub off

the thing was sticking and wouldnt turn, would these pass the mot?

doesnt matter for mot as long as the brakes work to the set % inc handbrake but you may find oyu wont have enough adjustment if the shoes are worn

ahh ok thanks for the info. will put it back on for the time being and try an mot with it as it is. the cinq wont be on the road afta the mot so dont matter. just tried to move the friction plate, but it wont move in to that little grove any suggestions?

Check for leaks around the cylinders and free up the handbrake levers and adjust the cable accordingly and you should get a decent brake for the MOT.

no brake fluid as of yet still got to do that, will have a little play though.

right ive had a play but the drum still wont move, i think its down to the friction pads. the handbrake is off, not that it works any way. the other part of the drum will spin freely with out the drum on but when the drum is put on the friction plates stop the drum turning.

what have i got to do next?

when you have the drum off have you tried pushing the shoes in by hand on both sides?

after fitting my new shoes mine dragged until i fitted new springs.guess the old springs let the shoes fit too far out

trie one side but not both

new though about the springs being too loose will go have a look again now

why one side?if you push both sides you can centre them rather than having them to one side

tried to get the friction plate in so i only pushed one side. tryied both side now an neither will move. should both the things that the friction plates slot in to both move inwards?

any way had a little play and i can get it to spin freely with out the hub on again. put the hub on and it still moves fairly freely start putting the two little bolts on and it slows down, start tightening the nut and it back to square one very little movement

so this must rule out the springs as it moves freely around them when not tightened, so my thoughs are its catching on some thing. rubed down both the hub and the backing plate to get rid of rust, still the same :bang:

Late into this one, and i'm a wee bit lost about the different hubs that you seem to have.

Firstly, mount up the hub, the bit with the bearing in it. That should spin freely. Leave it on.

Make sure the drums have no lip on the inner edge, if so, grind it away.

Try and fit the drum over the shoes. It should go on with a small amount of drag.

If it does not go on, use two large levers, one either side, to skweez the shoes together to allow the drum to just fit. The shoes need to be centred, also using the levers.

hub and bearing spin freely

all lips rubbed away

drum goes over shoes with small amount of drag

then the problem starts, as you tighten the nut it doesnt spin freely, as you tighten even more you cant move it at all

sounds like the drum is rubbing on the edge of the shoes

looking at that picture it looks like youve lost one of the clips that holds the shoes in place.

just check the shoes are sat back in place properly

Well spotted. The clip is missing so the right hand shoe will be at an angle. As you put the drum on the shoes is grabbing it. Replace the clip and the shoe shoud be parallel.

yeah i broke the clip off some how when removing the drum for the 1st time they were still sticking before that though. will get a new one tomorrow. what they called does any one know (brake shoe retainer clip?)

you can just buy a full brake spring set for around a fiver fm motor factors.
has new clips,pins and springs

ahh that sounds ok, but after reading ghosts thread about his rear drums may be a pain.lol

have they got to be specific to the cinq or are they general kits

They are Cento specific, I picked up a Delphi Lockheed axle set for £4.60 from factors.
