looking at the faq for the swap it says use sporting gear box is there a reason for this ie a better gearbox or is it to do with clutch?

was looking at a punto in the breakers and it had a hydraulic clutch is that the same on all models?

cheers

Buy a Haynes or Porter manual. The procedure is covered quite well in there.
Potted version:
Drain oil and water - dispose of in an environmentally friendly manner.
Remove exhaust manifold and front pipe/cat section.
Remove intake manifold and throttle body.
Remove gear linkages - unbolt the front one and pop the balljoint of the rear one.
Remove the speedo cable from the gearbox end.
Remove driveshafts from gearbox? Naaaah, lets do it the easy way:
- Jack up the car and support it so the front bumper is approx. as high off the ground as your new engine is tall. Remove the front wheels.
- Undo the lower strut to hub bolts on both sides.
- Remove the inner CV boot securing clips on the big ends.
- Pull back the hubs and disengage the tripods on the shafts from the cv joint outers.
- Bag up the open ends of the joints so they don't get mucky. Carrier bags and tape will do nicely.
- Remove clutch cable, any remaining water hoses and wires connected to the engine. Check for earth leads etc.
- Support the engine with the hoist.
- Undo the mounts and drop the engine and 'box tothe floor, carefully.
- Separate engine and gearbox
- Put gearbox on new engin
e (Don't get them mixed up, would be a terrible disappointment)
- Put engine and box back in, reconnect / refill everything. Cento starter and alternator will fit just fine.
I've got an 899 though...

To fit a FIRE engine then, you'll need:
New engine mounts
Full new exhaust (899 is a smaller bore as standard)
1108 or 1242 ecu, or have the 899 remapped
Sporting gearbox and driveshafts
Sporting gear stick, linkages and cables

Engine bay loom ideally
Clutch
Engine complete with manifolds, SPI throttle body and sensors
Induction kit or airbox
Coils, plugs and leads
Anti-roll bar would be nice
Water pipes
there is no mention of a gearbox swap for the 1108 and for the 899cc/1242cc upgrade you need a cento sporting box

Put gearbox on new engine (Don't get them mixed up, would be a terrible disappointment)

but hey im asking for clarification not argueing and hence my other question about hydraulic clutch

cheers

no im not paraphrasing or argueing.the cinq has a cable clutch.
you DO NOT NEED A PUNTO GEARBOX

have you ever seen a post on fitting a hydraulic clutch to cento with all the 1242 threads?
if im paraphrasing then highlight the secyion of the FAQ im missing.

i seem to remember you going the same route on a recent thread?
feel free to give yourself more work.

thats what i was getting at why use the sporting gearbox that was my question?

sorry to be more clear is the reason you use the sporting gearbox to do with the fact that the punto gearbox uses a hydraulic clutch so this would save you modifications to accomodate this or is the sporting gearbox just better?

going from your first post i'll assume your doing a 1108cc to 1242cc conversion.

You need to use the 1108cc (standard cinq sporting) gearbox as all puntos use hydralic clutches and the Cinq uses a cable clutch. Yes, it can be converted but its pointless and will take more work than its worth as you wont benefit from it really. There is no benefit using the punto box as it is the same bar the hydralic bits and bobs.

If its an 899cc to 1242cc conversion then youstill need to use the 1108cc box as its the same problem with the clutch being cable and not hydralic like the punto. you cant use the 899cc gearbox as it simply wont fit.

Hope that answers your question

you use the sporting box for two reaons, the clutch is one of them - the other is that the gear ratios suit the car. both boxes are rated to the same torque, so no reason at all to use the punto one.
