Styling re-spray

that depends on if you are wanting a full respray, certain panels respraying etc.

Your location is also be a factor, seeing as you are from london i would expect a varied price and would expect it to be more where you live than compared to where i live in the north.

Didnt any companies in your local yellow pages or alternatives give you any prices?

as long as the prep is done right it will knock the price down a fair bit. allot of people do their own prep and **** it up big time e.g. filler work so if your not confident leave it to someone who knows what theyre doing. as dave said 500-1000 for a standard colour more for met, pearl or holos

you see this would my concern of doing my own prep.would it be up to scratch and in the long term would it afect the quality and longevity of the spray work

Agreed.

I took my panels that need doing to my neighbour yesterday (he'll spray them for me)...we stripped the tape layers off the tailgate (these were to protect from the elements until I could swap tailgates), and found that my fillering and initial prep had all gone horribly wrong, as the tape had leaked - water and grit had got in - causing the filler to bubble up and the paintwork to get gritty.

It now needs resanding and may need more filer work :(

Moral of the story...dont do half measures, leave what you cant do until you can, unless you can get professional advice, even then they'll tell you the same thing :D :bang:

i deliver to 2 garages in a little off street lane.one is a full on bodyshop but seems really poorly run.place is a mess and there a saxo been in there for about 9 months now making slow progress though does have lambo doors, smoothing etc.
other one i assumed only did small body repairs ut i see them prepping a rover for a full respray so hope in the future i may be able to get a mates rates quote.
for me a respray is a final stage(ish)in a project, once most mechanical work is done so i can wait for that.would more than likely be sticking to cool yellow anyway :)

is there a person on here that could write a guide?

im going to be doing mine in a few month, havent got a clue what to do, but you dont learn unles you try. think a guide may be very usefull to other DIY people like my self (y)
i dont thin a full respray falls under a guide remit.
there are many skills/techniquies.
body prep,spray prep,spraying,finishing etc.
i dont know near enough to guide you on this though i did DIY spray a car years back but this was a quick blow over to tidy up a runner

I know a lad who resprayed his escort in matt black with halfords spray cans and it looks toss. In fact its so bad everyone scratches their names and abuse in to it! Respraying small bits I would feel confident to do, maybe even bumpers and skirts, but a whole respray, nah.

well you have to try in order to learn, like i did with my engine conversion, which is ready to go back in again.

its going to be a fun car hence the conversion and a learning pattern for car mechanics. nearly done the engine bit, will be moving on to drums soon, then body work :D

alot of people thought i was mad doing a conversion when i didnt even know how to change brake pads. :D

so come on people teach me what you know :p

For a full respray I personally would want to be working in a large clean dust free environment which cannot be contaminated in anyway. Then I would want to to be spraying with a compressor gun in a smooth motion at a constant distance away from the bodywork, probably between 8 and 12 inches. Also do it on a warm day or at room temperature (20 degrees celsius) as its better for the paint. Theres lots lots more to it as well.

Other points whilst Im thinking about this; make absolutely sure all dust from sanding layers has been removed before the next layer as this will make a real mess of the paint. I will be in the process of writing a how to on spraying wheels soon, it will be with cans :(,but you may find it useful when it's made.
Also go right back to bare metal or plastic and start again, I didn't do that first time I resprayed my BMX and regretted it as the original paint was flaky which caused the respray to be flaky.
This is also a good time to sort out any rust spots, smoothing etc.

IIRC some pros use cans on wheels too......................
