I dont know if this has already been done, forgive me if it has. I changed my gearknob this morning using the OMP adapter & OMP gearknob and thought I would do a guide for any beginners wanting to do it or even some other people who are scared to do it.
Tools needed:
- Hacksaw
- OMP Adapter
- Gearknob to fit OMP adapter
1. Rip open the cover on the gearknob, cutting down the threads. Then get a hacksaw and saw through the rubber gearknob, probably about 3/4 of the way down and then pull that off.
2. You will see a rounded thing at the top of the shaft that the gearknob was moulded around. Start cutting down about 1-2cm from the bottom of that with your hacksaw, beware that there is a metal shaft going up through the inside of the gearshaft, so when you hit that stop and move round the shaft and start cutting again. Until you have cut all round the shaft and the top should now pull off.
3. Then you need to take your OMP adapter and screw that onto the shaft, make sure to hold the gearshaft to stop you twisting and breaking that and only twisting the adapter. The adapter should probably sit about 1-2cm down the shaft.
4. Then take your gearknob and screw that into the adapter, making sure that it is screwed on properly and that the adapter doesnt twist round easily or move side to side.
5. Then finally fasten your gaiter around the bottom of the adapter and then you finished!
Make sure just to go for a quick drive around the block of something to make sure the gearknob & adapter are secured properly.
And it should look something like this:
And then with a little hoover out and tidy, this is what I came out with:
Hope this helps.
