Hi, I was thinking about putting some flexi-hose or something in my front bumper behind the mesh somewhere on the right hand side and lead it up through the engine to my K&N, I understand that rain might be able to get up the hose, what are the advantages or disadvantages of placing it there?

rain isnt really a problem as long as you dont have the feed pipe right ont the filter.
what you need to be careful of is if you say hit a big puddle and a large amount of water is forced up the pipe through the filter.
this is where engine damage can occur as water in the cylinders will not compress like air and bends conrods etc!

have you thought about opening the blanked of ornamental gasket hole on the passengers side and having it behind there?
 
mine used to have a big cold air feed like this:
