Hi, just had a new radiator switch fitted today but it's not working!

About 4 months ago our mechanic fitted a manual switch as fiat couldn't get parts in for 5 days. Anyway got new switch fitted today but its not working! We kept the manual overide switch fitted anyway.

When the engine gets hot (needle above halfway) and the manual fan switch is turned on the engine temp starts to cool fairly quickly. To me, this indicates that the thermostat is operating correctly. The radiator was fitted new about 18 mths ago.

When the temperature is allowed to rise without manually switching the fan on, the temp continues to rise and the new fan switch does not cut in by itself. Im sure the temp needle would go to the redzone if left unchecked.

What could be the problem?

Can't say for sure but i think the rad and fan switch is the same on the 899 as it is on the 1108 and if so the thermostat doesn't bring the fan on until 92'c and off at 88'c so on the temp gauge this seems to be about 90'c on dial tho some have reported it to be just above and some just below but this will be down to inaccuracies in the gauge itself.

Does this tally with your findings, have you let the engine get upto the 90'c mark?

Aaron.

Aaron, the temp will go right up and probably into the redzone although I dont want to push my luck.. I only recently refitted the rocker gasket due to the cover warping and creating an oil leak!

D, so when the switch is shorted (with overide off) then the fan should operate?

Yup, remove the socket from the switch and open up a paper clip to short out the switch. Ignition on and the fan should run, then you will know whether its the switch thats at fault, or not.

I presume you did bleed the system fully once you'd fitted the new switch.

Cheers

T1, I havent checked supplies at the relay, not sure where its located. Supposing there was a problem with correct supplies is this likely to be caused by faulty wiring somewhere?

D, yes the coolant was changed and system bled for airlocks. Cheers

I dont think the Cinq system has a relay. IIRC its a fused feed from the battery to the fan switch that then leads to the motor as a 'positive lockout' type of connection.

EDIT - Im partially wrong. The system does have a relay, but it doesnt actually use it. The fuse for this circuit is the one that is in the exterior lighting relay. The relay drives the exterior lighting only.
