Mine started to make this noise yesterday, its quite loud, I can hear inside the car when driving, it starts to make the noise when the revs rise but as soon as I go to change gear it stops as the clutch goes down and starts again as the revs rise again. Any idea what it could be? More importantly though, is it going to be expensive? ;)

Is it engine noise or transmission noise? I cannot tell from your description if the noise goes because you have depressed the cluth or reduced engine revs to change gear. In any case I would check engine and transmission oil first, is it there and does it still look like oil.
Try to isolate the noise. Bonnet up.. rev up.. is the noise there? Tappets, loose mounting, exhaust bracket or loose baffle, something nasty in the engine block:( (Oh and do you have a turbo fitted?)
Less likely to be transmission if linked to revs rather than road speed but if you cannot hear the noise with the bonnet up then it could be the clutch or gearbox engine side.
Good luck.:)

85% of Marea HLX drivers have speeding tickets.... lol they'll have to catch me first.

I think the noise stops because the revs drop. The noise also isnt as loud when the car is fully warmed up, but is still there a little bit.

Is it a coincidence that the flat spot at about 2-3k rpm is more evident now than ever?

Please help, I dont want to kill my car and ever have to catch the train to work everyday!!! :(

might be the alternator. mine's making a similar noise but dies off once the engine's warmed up. It seems like it's lost power too, the alternator belt has been checked and given the ok.

Speedbumps are my arch enemys!!!

Mines due for its 36k mile service soon so do you think it can wait?

I do about 250-300 miles a week and its at 35200 miles at the moment so do you think if I wait until 36k miles it will be OK? Any ideas what I can mention to the mechanic when it goes in to give him an idea on what he is looking for?

Any ideas how much 36k mile service will be? What a great xmas this will be if I have to fork out for a service and repairs!! :( ho ho ho. :(

I've got the cash, but Im rather attached to it would rather not spend it! (my dad drilled it into me that if I was getting a car I would have to save some money every month for payiong the insurance, tax, MOT, servicing and repairs, nice one pops!)

Might give them a call tommorow.

Cheers for the help. If anyone has any other ideas as to what it could be I'd be mucho appreciatos.

Lol, I am the Dad.;)
If you're that close to a service you may as well put it in. Just check the warranty first, should be ok though.
Know how you feel though, I hate spending money myself and I am starting to get annoyed with an elusive misfire that is slowly getting worse.:(

Cars going in tommorrow to see about it. Its doing it all the time now :(

I've asked them to call me when they know what it is and how much its going to cost. :(

Looks like affording some alloys may be a littlw while longer :(

I always find people get charged more when its a strange noise that a car goes in for. The mechanics start replacing bits all over the show, then finally find the problem. Meanwhile, you get a shiny new engine and a large bill.

Another day...another problem...

If I knew what it was I'd have a crack myself. I am completely clueless as to where it is coming from, nobody on here seems to know either so Im up the creek!

I'll post how much the garage want tommorrow...

Anyone want to buy two amps, a sub box and a set of components??:(

how much?

I hope it never comes to selling my stuff, I really couldnt live without my ICE, I couldnt bare a journey with just the rattles for company!

It sounds like the clutch my dad reckons, like the plates are bent?

It sounds sad but I hope the engine is proper f**ked, I have an excuse for a 1242 then!

Steve from the garage just called......it was the clutch........... and thank f**k, it was just the casing or something. he didnt have to buy any parts, hes done it for me for £0.00 ! yay!

He's sorted my rattly heatshield, sorted my brakes, fitted new brake shoes at the back, fitted the handbrake properley (it was fitted wrongly, the spacer was on the wrong side of the nut!)

36k mile service as well, replaced my fuel filter (as I expected, as I ran out of petrol not long ago)... al for £159.70

Im well chuffed, thought I was going to need a new clutch or something!

He also mentioned the cam belt, said he would have a word when I picked it up, do you reckon it needs replacing? Its probably on the same one from new. Any idea of cost for replacing it, is it easy to DIY?

Cant wait to go for a drive later! Going to go to Mansfield Cruise to race some Novas! :D:D[8D]:):D[8D]

As you can tell, Im a bit pleased that my baby isnt dead anymore! Yay!

Great garage, wish I could find one like that. :D
Cam belt is prob getting close to need changing, esp if you go through the revs a lot. You can do it yourself, depends on how good you are. I would say, however, that if you have to ask then get it done at that wonderful garage of yours. The sound of a valve going through a pot is quite scarey, even if it doesn't last very long. ;)
Would mckrob be shocked if he heard my cam belt cost £857? ;)

AIUI

The "FIRE" engine is "non-interference": the valves and pistons miss if you snap the belt.:D

Cambelt on 5 pot Mareas is officially an engine out job to do - hence mega-bucks.:(
