Having now resided myself to having to change the head gasket on my wifes 899cc cinq sx even after the help and advice of other readers the thing still dont run! I have fords for years and thay always start even when the gasket is knackered!!!.
I need to know or confirm that skimming the head is essential when the gasket is changed. Ive never had to do this before but reading through the threads from the Punto people it appears to be standard every time, is this a filat thing because all i intend to do is check it with a piece of glass and bolt the thing back on.....The wife wants her car back and i like a quiet life.......
Also looking at the book it refers to a fiat tool to pre tension the lifters. do i have to buy it or is it a Torx fitting.

any advice/ comments welcome!!!

With an 899 I would carefully check the head with a straight edge and feelers to confirm straightness. Also check the valves and seats for high spots.

Punto people will give slightly different answers as, I think, all puntos are alloy headed OHC motors. rather than cast OHV.

The tappets in the 899 need a little preloading when assembling, but the manual goes through it, I don't remember needing a special tool.

Cheers

D
