Technical Disc change

Hi Folks,

Changed the discs\pads on my 2001 Sei Sporting yesterday....The wheelstuds were INCREDIBLY tight ! Took me around 15mins each to extract....Is this normal???

They were just as tight on the way back in even greased up with copperslip. There is no thread damage and they aint rusty.

I changed the disc 'cause one of them was scored and squeeling, yet the calipers are moving (sliding) freely and the piston moves in and out the bore with no problem.

Using the car today, I thought I heard a squeek at one point !! But I may have imagined it.....

One other thing...In the mornings when I press the brake, its like the pedal is sticky...only for the first press, after that all is normal.

Any comments??

Did you change the brake fluid as well?

The scoring could of been something as silly as a stone getting caught..

The wheelstuds, yeah they are very tough to take off the first time you come to do it. I seem to recall a complex series of levers was required.

I think a squeak can be caused by not having greased the back of the brake pad(where it mounts onto the caliper). People will correct me on this.

AS for the pedal stickyness, my brake pedal does the same first thing on a cold morning too. Dunno if its a good or bad thing but i don't worry too much about it. I just press the brake before i get to the end of the drive and it alrighty.

All I can say is I hope the wheel studs never need to come off again !!!

I lightly greased up all of contact points and the back of the pad so hopefully the pads are moving freely.....

Is there a recommended "bedding in " process, or should I just drive gently for a few hundred miles...

Sounds like the wheels have never been off in it's life, erm try not to hammer the brakes and drive gently for 150-200 miles then brakes as normal.

I beg to differ, but your wheel bolts have been stretched by overtightening. They may look alright, but they should come off with your fingers once the first pressure has been released.

Replace your bolts immediately, before they snap, and tighten to the proper torque.

Hmmm, that does not sound good. They came loose as you suggested but after about a 1\4 turn, they were tight all of the way out...Nearly gave me a hernia !!

What thread are they, cause I doubt if I could manage to shift them again with a 19mm spanner. If I could lock up a couple of nuts on the stud, I could get a socket on and wind it out with a breaker bar.....

All advice welcome

Apologies, I think the sei has studs with nuts on. The studs will have been put in with threadlock which is why they would be difficult to come out. You should have run a tap or thread cleaner down the holes and refitted with fresh threadlock.

No - they Sei has Bolts. Studless hubs.

I think you were right in the first intance rallycinq. Stretched Bolts.

Had to buy a new set the other day for mine. Order them through your local garage - mine came to £1.74 + VAT for a set of 4!!!

Theres both I think.

I would think that they are non-tensile bolts myself (not designed to stretch)...so replace them ASAP...youre meant to do that with stretch bolts anyway...

Well i know my Sei has studs and nuts. I couldn't be doin with the Cinq studless design, makes it more of a faff trying to get the wheel back on.

Cos I is a smartarse my cinq has studs and nuts. The OP mentions that he would need to put two nuts on to get the studs out so I was going on the basis that this Sei was a 'stud 'n' nut' one.
