Hi all,

The story of this car started all the way back in October of 2019. While searching for a roll cage for my seicento track car. Through word of mouth I was told of this car that was half prepped for the cento challenge in Ireland but had been abandoned. It had a roll cage fitted which is all I needed. When I went to view the car it turned out to be a very original Abarth but unfortunately it had started to rot in the usual places.

Unsure of what to do with the car I took it regardless as I needed the cage and it was a good deal. Now months later I am trying to decide what to do with the car. There are pictures below of the cars current state. While it looks a mess it is a complete car most parts on the car are in very good condition such as interior parts and externals like the sunroof. The car has 100,000 miles and complete service history right up till the point it was imported to Ireland in 2014 where it has been off the road since. The car runs and drives fine and never seems to have been messed with.

The bad points. The car is suffering badly from rust. The passenger side rear wheel arch both inner and outer has completely rotted away. The driver side is not as bad but still in a sorry state. The passenger side rear sill has started to rot away. The car has also been in a small rear end collision around 2010. The boot door has been replaced and is missing the spoiler. There is also a small buckle in the rear quarter panel as a result of this. In reality it would have been a very small incident. Otherwise the car is very solid and really the main rust problems are contained at the rear. Mechanically the car is very good, runs and stops as it should. Suspension in very good nick and it did have brand new brakes fitted (obviously could do with a refresh now.) Interior wise there has been 4 box section supports welded in to support the roll cage. These can been very easily cutout. Otherwise the interior is in good condition and is fully complete even the seats are in good condition just needs a clean. The paint has also faded but would buff up fine. Bodywork is also very straight with not many signs of dings and dents.

I am trying to decide if I should save this car or part it out. The car is very rare especially in Ireland and I know it has the potential to clean up and be a nice classic for the road. Apart from the rust on the car there isn't a huge amount of work to get it back to original and re-install the interior. If I was to save the car I would be planning on buying another shell that is being scrapped to use for cutouts. Let me know your opinions.

I'm not sure what the best thing to do is, it does need a lot of work.
I have a Seicento sporting in mint condition 27k miles. Selling for the right price if you're interested but in the meantime I'm trying to improve it and I'd be interested in buying those side skirts off you if you have both of them and want to sell parts..?

I’ve been offered a Yellow Spi Abarth, full history with mot, less that 50k. What would that realistically be worth?
I’m really after a yellow Cinquecento Sporting.
O what to do.....,

To anyone who may be interested. After much debate I have decided to save this car. I have sourced a a bog standard Seicento SX Shell to re-purpose and transfer all the sporting parts over to. I plan on a respray and hopefully have the car looking original as it did.

Thanks for the replies, I know its been a while. I plan on keeping the side skirts. Regarding what one may be worth probably anywhere between 500-1000 I'm guessing all depending on condition.

Youre a divil for punishment .I wouldnt take it on unless I was friendly with a body shop man or handy at that stuff myself .

I have started the restoration. The donor shell turned out to have very rotten sills (sunroof drains were blocked). I am going to restore the original Abarth shell after much debate. Currently in the process of drilling out the spot welds holding in the rear boot panel to get better access at fixing the rear arches.

I'd be interested in how you get on as I have a 98 version of this car - Siecento Sporting Abarth - that's only done 37k miles. Have rust on the passenger rear wing but hopefully hasn't got too far. Just about to take rear bumper and side skirts off so will check the sills. What are your plans for your car?

Mine is also a 98 reg. Yours doesn't sound as bad as mine. Both rear arches have gone as well as the rear of the sills needing a bit of attention. I am hoping to restore the car and get it on the road as a "classic". The car is more of a long term project as well as learning a bit of welding on it. I'm aware it will cost me more than the car is worth but I have always wanted an Abarth seicento and they aren't easy to come by here in Ireland. I already have a donor car for cutouts but it is stored at a different location. Hopefully over the summer I will get the 2 cars together. I have mostly been cutting out the rot at the moment and just planning how I'm going to make cuts from the other shell. Unfortunately I have other projects ongoing I need to get out of the way first so progress is slow.

This is my actual car on the Honest John site, looks like it may have been the press car at the time

As it was inherited, at first I was very nonplussed by it but over the few months that I've had it somehow it has grown on me and I'm now looking at it as a project and even watching Miller Corner on YouTube for tips. But first is rust!

Ah that's mad, I've seen that picture floating around many times over the years! Sadly rust seems to be a killer on all these cars over the past few years.
