Technical 2002 Seicento SX 1.1 starter motor location

Hi everyone.

My Seicento has been sitting for a few months. I went to start it and got a couple of turns then nothing. My initial thought was the battery. I charged it, tried again, same thing. I tried jumping it from a friend's car. I'm gonna try the old smack it with a hammer approach to see if I get any joy. Where abouts is the starter motor located?

Behind the engine bolted through the block to the bellhousing.

Did you try and jump it battery to battery or battery to block?

Will it turn over by hand?

Take plugs out and try.

Try an earth lead from engine to battery.

Thanks for the reply. I've figured out it's the starter. I'm assuming it's easier to remove and replace from under the car?

I'm new to working on cars so just trying to learn the basics!

check the connector plugs that are hidden under the battery tray. when i rebuilt my engine i had trouble with the connections on these and the car wouldnt start. i cleaned them all up and it has been fine since.

in regards to the starter, yes, remove from underneath is the way to do it. make sure the battery is disconnected first. its not too bad a job to do.

Great. Thank you. I'll check the connections in the morning. I have access to a lift ramp so I can get underneath it and change out the starter next week if need be.

Got the new starter on today. Started fine but the auxiliary belt was slipping majorly and started smoking, then cut out.

I loosened the belt from the alternator and everything ran fine. The alternator is very stiff in some places so I'm guessing it partially seized whilst sitting.

I had trouble removing the belt from the bottom pulley as there's no space to slip it off.

I'm going to replace the alternator and belt. I'll cut off the old belt, but there isn't a lot of room to slip a new one over the bottom pulley. Is there a bit of a technique for this or just remove the bottom pulley?

Gonna try in the morning as I ran out of light!

There should be enough room if you loosen the alternator bolts and tilt it fully up.
If not I have also done it by removing the 3 bolts that hold the lower pulley to the cambelt sprocket.

Either way works fine.

If you decide to remove the lower pulley make sure you fit the nipple in the right place when refitting.

It sounds like the alternator is seized. I had this same issue (I think water had been draining through the battery try into/onto the alternator).

Which was possibly the OP's original problem...

There's a cutout in the inner wheel arch to allow the alternator to escape. If you remove the bolts holding it in place and the adjuster/sliding bolt, it ought to drop down so then you can pull it out (after disconnecting the cables).
