Got the 40mm tb fitted finally on sat night, first drive was down to surrey (the plan was to run it in) pulling up the road felt so much smoother off boost, but the second I came on boost (or full throttle) the car will pull back quite violently and start popping like mad, this is only on full boost if I keep boost at about 0.2/0.3 bar it will be fine (not as quick as normal but ok non the less). Not sure if the TB is to blame have checked all pipes and all seems fine ditto electrical connectors, not sure if it just needs setting up again for the bigger volume of air that’s probably getting in? or it could be to do with the fact I have most of my exhaust gasses going out a leak between manifold/turbo join, but cant see how that would affect it (is boosting fine – albeit a lot slower than normal according to the boost gauge) think im either pulling manifold/tub join apart tonight or trying the 1.1 tb again, not sure where to start, what do you guys think? :(

Edit: is also alot smoother at higher revs, most noticeable is at about 3-5k where it is very rough and jerky and also backfires alot with loud pops

Your fueling and possibly timing would be well out.

I would put the original back on until your manifold is fixed and then go get it setup properly however it would be alot lot better once you do.

sounds like the fuelling for sure. same as when my second injector wiring was loose.
after fitting mine i found the power a bit on/off rather than flowing if oyu know what i mean but this is most definatly down to mine needing a healthy rolling road session.
maybe if i stop having to put tyres on it may get on the RR :(

come to think of it, prev car behaved the same when my batt died completely (so injectors not working etc) so think you guys maybe right, hopefully its just not setup right not that i've broken something  will fix the blowing exhaust tonight and fit 1108 tb i think, save up for rollingroad and fueling setup for the 40mm in new yr (y)

I know that my car wasn't running great recently but that was down to the fuel cut coming, diff issue from yours I fell as you would notice these symptoms as soon as +boost was made, i.e. not being able to hold half boost only full boost would ensure smooth progress. It now runs great with the 40mm TB, very smooth, very progressive to drive with minimum lag which is non existent at motorway cruising speeds.

Did you ensure that all surfaces were clean before putting new TB on and did you use a supplementary gasket compound like Loctite Grey which is meant for inlet manifolds so resists fuel as any air leaks can upset the fuelling massively, i found that this made me car run much better after applying, as first time I fitted TB car didn't run brilliantly.

Aaron.

so your car ran ok after just popping the tb on? :chin: might give it a try with fixing the blowing manifold join (will i be ok just taking apart and puttying with exhaust joiner paste stuff then back together or will i need to double check faces of joins both machined true?) and try the 40mm tb with instant gasket at every join or something, will see how i go, checking buses to get to work tomorrow just incase :p

Don't just use any instant gasket tho, use the Loctite one meant for inlet manifolds, it is availble at Halfords for a few pounds.

And use Fire Gum on your exhaust as its a lubricant to ease fitment and a flexible sealer once set, unlike Gun Gum which sets hard and is realy meant for sealing holes!

You will def. need a new setup when you fit a bigger TB.

With the standart TB the butterfly was the resistant point - now its the valves - and this might change the MAP sensor output.

This could be the reason to the studdering and popping you feel.

ah was wondering when you'd pop on (y) :D i didnt get as far as looking at the car tonight, infact my car is at the min 2 hours walk away :( abandoned because people dont know how to drive in snow and ruined my run up (plus got nowhere to go but ditch from top of said hill lol) walked home in just work trousers and shirt  so cold :(

picked up fire gum and bits from halfrauds though

Boost comes up slowly and it pops and bangs?

I'd suggest there's a boost leak on one of the pipes somewhere. Does yours run the MF2? (Memory like a goldfish)...

if so I'd say it's probably somewhere between tb and one of the impulse lines that it's connected to. The slow reading boost gauge makes me think the signal is leaking away somewhere.

think slow boosting due to the fact nothing spinning the turbine its all escaping, now have the cinq in bits in the garage, manifold and turbo nuts have come loose a tiny bit  and giving it nice big hole for it to blow on

about to put back together but dont think i will as i dont have any locktite lying about that i know of :( and dont want to have same problem again :(

Ok Update for you all:

She now has a non blowing manifold/turbo join... the bolts on new manifold had bent slightly in the heat and let the turbo drop a mm  (think this as had fun putting back together) now back together with shedload of firegum and locktite (well only enough but more than none lol) took her for drive, on full throttle/boost still has fueling prob (not as bad as before) but before that, so much quicker/smoother even off boost. will take the 40mm tb apart and possibly try putting back together with the 40mm but with lots of the instant inlet gasket stuff will see how goes (y)

but i love my cinq :D

Edit: also all the nice silver "high temp" paint on manifold is burning off when she gets up to temperature  nasty smelling stuff :(

Think its def a inlet manifold leak, have put all back togther today with sealant stuff, and then managed to shear one of the bolts off inlet manifold  will hit a scrappy for another tomorrow before work, just took her for drive and has same prob bit worse now so pretty sure its a inlet leak not the tb etc (y)

As most of you know was fuelling but thought i'd update the 40mm tb + turbo maths... OMG  it is unreal  the overtaking power it now has is shocking to say the least, guy infront of me started to overtake in a beemer, i put foot down and before beemer even overtaken car we're overtaking im already there :D :worship: i'm so happy :D now the bodywork...
