Hi there,

The snow has fallen yesterday in Holland and although I am a real "slippery road" freak,
I got really terrified with my old Pirellis (they are crap (too old) and will get replaced in spring anyway). No grip of any kind whatsoever

Normally (back in Poland) I always drive on winter tyres (in winter that is, not the whole year ;) ). Just found out that for my Cinq. Sporing getting winter tyres is not quite so easy, have to get whole new wheels (no winter tyres that would fit on the rim). Does anybody use winter tyres on his or hers Sporintg. What rim/tyre size? My guess is 145/70/13 on a 4.5 rim, but maybe there are better hints...

Another solution would be to get regular tyres that would also do good during winter/occasional snow, but not Pirellis. I read some posts and it seems many people are using 175/50/13. Can I put them on the regular cinq. sporting rims? Are there any problems I have to look out for (too wide and not fitting inside the body?) Any brands that would do reasonably on snow (or at least cold rain)?

BTW, I posted sometime ago about problems with a slightly overheating engine. Thanks to your help and advice I sorted everything out. Engine runs really smooth now. Thanks (y)

165/65/13Q Goodyear ultragrip 6 on sporting rims, worked fine for me at the past. Use 155/65/13 if you need better traction on snow...

Got them, very handsome thingies :D What pressure do you recommend?

2.2 front, 2.1 back bars (30 - 29 in psi) is good.

I would recommend slightly more than 30 PSI i would recommend 32, thats what i set mine too or am i putting too much in, i do a lot of motorway driving

EDIT - mine are 14'' :p

If you use a filling station guage the 32 could well be 29, or even 35, they are notoriously inaccurate!!

I have my own double gauage footpump. Is 32 PSI ok?

Yup, not a problem if you are happy with the handling.

It will also depend on what the ambient temp is when you do your checks, and whether you have run the car recently.

As an extreme example, when racing in the summer we used to set the tyre pressures to 26 to get 34 during the race. Too much sideways excitement and rear tyres went to nearly 40, which was not good.

Hence why some race teams use nitrogen to pressurise their tyres.

In essence, if you are happy with the handling and they are not wearing out on the shoulders (too low a pressure) or wearing out at the centre (too high a pressure) then go with it.

Cheers

D
