Hi guys,

Thanks for all your clutch help when I posted a topic a few weeks ago regarding that. It's all fixed and remedied by a cable adjustment. However, I've been noticing a burning smell through my vents and assumed I dropped some oil when I checked it.

Sat at the petrol station tonight, my car began to overheat. I checked the coolant and it's a bit lower than i'd like but within the levels so will just refill when I can. However, I noticed this. Is it just a rocker leak or has anyone had something like this where it's been more serious? I know it might sound stupid of me to ask but never come across anything like this before. Thanks

Remove, clean and replace that gasket. They are so cheap anyway.
I have always found them a bitch to 100% seal, but it will be loads better than that.

The overheating is another issue though. Is your fa. Coming on?

Thank you! I'll get it replaced asap. I think I'll need to go to Fiat, the guy who does my usual stuff like the clutch hasn't really done anything like this before. :?

Re the fan, it came on tonight after sitting with the engine on for less than 10mins, I know it's not good practice to do that anyway but I was at the petrol station and didn't think it would take so long. Could it be anything to do with the oil seeping on to the radiator?

If he can do a clutch he can do that. Its only 4 bolts. You could do it yourself, takes about half an hour.

If the fan came on then went off then it's working as it should. It's when the fan comes on and doesn't go off and the temp rises you need to worry.

Decided to do it myself, he's probably just palming me off and I've got everything I need to unbolt an engine cover. Thanks for your help!

Surprising as it's easy money. A 10mm socket with extension, the gasket, some degreaser and some rags is all you need

Maybe a wrong choice of words? The fan came on so I turned the car off, turned it back on a minute later and the fan came back on so turned it off for a further ten minutes and the fan stayed off that time.

Went under the bonnet at home and the metal panel and the hook sticking out of it directly underneath the engine block in the photo were both red hot - are they radiator related?

if the fan comes on, then you really want to ascertain whether the fan is sufficient to cool the engine down. you really should have left it.
this time of year it should only run for about 10-15 seconds before going off. it will then cycle on and off to control the temp.

if your heatshield is that hot then i would suspect your car is either running very lean or you have a blockage in the exhaust. i would get that checked out ASAP. excessive heat will cause the coolant system to struggle.

Fan should come on, that is good. I'd be leaving the engine running when it does as when you switch the engine off you also switch the water pump off so the cool water in the rad is not being circulated into the hot engine.

Make sure you have the correct coolant and that its to level and bled properly.

If incorrect coolant has been used the radiator maybe partially blocked which will lead to the fan coming on more often.

It looks like your poor wee car has had its maintenance neglected for a while so I'd start to work through preventative maintenance now.

Drain the cooling system, take the rad out and back flush it. Also take the opportunity to inspect the vanes. If the are missing/corroded then replace the rad. they are cheap enough and its easy enough to do.

When refilling, use the correct coolant and bleed multiple times.

Thanks for all this! :)

Yeah, little Seicento has been used and abused as a motorway driver for 3 years with no maintenance to be seen. MOT due in March but booked in for a service at the end of the month to get it all started. :)

Spend your service money on basic tools and do it yourself. Then you'll know its done right.

Plenty of advise around these parts, if you need it.
