i need to do an oil change on the sprting , what should i use ? last time was 10-40 semi and thats been fine ,just wanted to know if that was the general accepted lube .

many thanks

 cool

it's goes and sounds happy on it so thanks for confirming that for me .

just wanted to make 100% sure (y)

well its a personal choice i think. all the oils have to meet the standards(cant remember the name)so at least meet that.
also its like own brand stuff it will stil be made by one of the big makers. on a standard engine i dont think it wwould do any harm though i tend to at least go for middle of the range branded oil

right ...back to the original question (y) 10w40 it is then

:D :D :D

PS im please you guys answered "the oil is oil mate" answer.
questions on forums need answers and advice NOT answers just for the sake of it .

What should also be mentioned is...

Whatever oil you use..

Don't wimp out on a cheap filter. genuine Fiat if you can get one.

Daft to spend good money on quality oil and fit a crap filter that might not be up to the job.(y)

Fiat and Haynes tell me 15W40, so thats what the 899 gets :)

Besides, the tech in my engine dates back to the 50s, when fully synthetic oils were undiscovered. So it won't need 5W stuff :)

I paid 5.99 for 5 litres of CarLube oil :slayer:

So does that mean that because in 1950 we did not have mobile phones you have not got one, or a dishwaher or use modern day drugs.

What kind of reply was that?
The internals of an 899, (e.g. 3 bearing crank etc) have been essentially 'as is' since the 50s. Therefore, the engine, to an extent, still relies on this technology. It was designed to run on grades such as 15W/40, not fully synthetic stuff. Its like the A series engine. Unless you have the likes of a Miglia spec or turbo engine, you wouldn't put 0 or 5W oil into the engine - its too thin (and that's coming from people that have owned, tuned and raced minis since 1959 who say that) :)

I love these threads that start with the title "Quick Oil Question" - they are guaranteed to be 4 page+ usually ending with a locked thread.

What is it about motor oil grades that winds people up? We dont get this kind of reaction to "Quick Tyre Question" or "Quick Petrol Supplier Question" threads
