having finally got the new cinq on the road, the speedo cable has given up.
after taking the old cable out it appears there is nothing wrong with it.

Have fitted a new cable anyway but still no joy, the cable doesnt even turn.

As the old cable was a bit stuck in the box, the whole mechanism came out the box, im not sure what you call it, but the 10mm nut screws into it (not fun to re align if you unscrew the 10mm nut too far out)

ive checked with the car running in gear (on axle stands) but the part the speedo cable pops into isnt spinning at all either so something isnt right.

any help would be great as i cant drive it till its fixed.

The plastic shaft that the cable pops into is a plastic spindle with a gear on the end. Remove 10mm bolt and check gear for damage or wear, inside gear box is a (usually white)plastic gear, check this is secured to diff.it is held in place by a plastic lug. If all is good and built up properly, cable should turn.

thanks for the reply. the gear oil level is ok and good. how do i check inside the box for the plastic gear and lug? thanks.

Remove the 10 mm bolt, pull out the speedo unit complete with plastic gear, put finger or flat screw driver in hole, and with one front wheel off the ground, spin the wheel by hand and check if you can stop the white gear from turning,if you can stop it,it's faulty, very unusual but possible.

thats great help. il try get a look at it tonight!

ive taken number 13 and 12 out (bit of a mission) and number 10 is spinning. do i need to take this out too to check number 14?

Either put 12 back in and see if 10 spins by fingers(this should not happen) or take 10 out and check it (should have straight sides) and then check 14 is secured to diff. 10 will spin if 12 is not holding 10 in place.

number 10 spins either way when turning left wheel forwards or backwards but after taking 10 out, it is in 2 bits, the main plastic cog and a seperate bit that the main speedo cable end fits into. should it be 1 piece? number 10 has no straight edges on it anywhere. i cant feel far enough to check number 14, may have to take side plate off for that, will try that 2moro or the weekend. thanks for the help!
