Wife just home with car and says both wipers went right over to the point the O/S one was sticking out to the road. Luckily this was close to home as its pashing it down so not going for a look just now. What the likely cause/culprit? Is the linkage in the bay or under the dash? Please say in the bay :D

Cheers

OK looks like its in the engine bay as just popped down for a look. I can also hear the motor working with a click, click, click so ill presume its something that has jumped of or lost a bolt. Is that cover easy to get off?

Work your way through the bulkhead carpet at the nearside to find the motor.

The chances are the main linkage has popped off, its easy to pop back on.

HOWEVER

Its most likely that the linkage has popped off as an effect rather than a cause.

Chances are the spindles have started to seize, so pop them out, strip them, abrade to remove the corrosion and reassemble with fresh grease.

This will require removal of the whole bulkhead carpet, so the battery needs to come out too.

You might find that the scuttle has started to split around one of the spindle holes and may need strengthening.

Cheers

Aye cheers. Looking at pictures i will presume the main middle arm has came away. Im also presuming anywhere else only one wiper would have went. Car not needed till Monday now so we should get a rain free day before then (y)

OK just peeling the carpet stuff back i can see the large arm has jumped off the small one what just goes round and round. The nylon end that hold the large arm on is perished. Can i buy that arm with the nylon separate? On another note due to being freezing i was not stripping and lubing so it only got a spray grease skoosh but i did notice, the bracket that holds the motor to the bulkhead moves. I presume its meant to being rubber mounted but i also noticed when standing at the drivers door with wipers on the bodywork next to the wiper stalk what comes out the bulkhead moves slightly with the wiper. This cant be the norm is it? Should i just be ordering a new linkage?

As I suggested earlier, the problem is the spindles seizing.

The outer part should not move at all, the fact it is moving confirms that the spindles are not great.

If you are a careless multi millionaire you can order a new linkage complete, its easy enough to refurb your existing following the instructions.

Cheers

Nothing to do with having money to burn. If i cant get the small arm or nylon retaining plug/thing then i need to buy a new linkage. Took it out again and lubed up. Bulkhead was moving due to wiper arm being to stiff. Sorted now so this is what i need or its a new linkage

You need a replacement arm, pop off to the local recyclers.

Aye i did suss that one :D Nowt local so looks like a trip to Newbridge in the morning. Just been looking on Gumtree. Little Blue one out your way for 260 quid. MOT just ran out but could be good for a parts car if you have the space.

Yeah SCB is still there. Funny thing the carpark is on a slight hill and was sheet ice. When i got back to the car i opened the bonnet and started putting this arm on. I noticed the oil rainbow colours in the ice running down. Thinking S**t what have i blown now starts looking round the engine bay then on the icy floor to see better. Turned out to be the heat from the car was melting the ice and the oil was under that already. I must have looked a right diddy lying in the ice :D
