Bear in mind I am exceedingly elderly....

Got cables, downloaded IAW-Scan

Now, my laptop does not have a CD drive so I downloaded the drivers from that internet thing.

Fire up the programme, it can't see the cable.

Tried on the boss's lappy. It has CD drive but when I go to install the driver as per the 'read me' file. Won't install.

Stuck......

Any advice appreciated.

Re: Free 1994 Cinq, 900cc ..

you shouldnt really need the drivers, if the computer/laptop is online it should in theory just install itself when you plug it in, theoretically at least. I know ive never installed drivers manually for any diagnostics cables anyway.

Been a while since i used IAWScan, i imagine you need to go tell the program where the cable is. I'll just install it and have a quick look, but i dont have a car i can connect to it anymore so hopefully i can work it out well enough to give you some instructions.

Re: Free 1994 Cinq, 900cc ..

right well, looks like the program doesnt have a setting page other than the first page where you select car etc.

Did you have the wire plugged into the laptop before you opened the program as thats pretty important, it wont ever see the cable otherwise.

Is there anything listed in the COM Select box? Mine with a fresh install and not having a cable hooked up shows COM1, i think there will/should be another entry there if a cable is connected - although the cable may just become COM1 (which does make sense).

So what happens if you connect the cable up to the laptop, open the program, connect cable to car, and try connect? Do make sure you select the 6f/16f ecu and don't use auto detection. Does it do anything at all, bring up an error? Or does it just sit there telling you to turn ignition on never connect? Wish i had a ecu to connect to, this would be much easier to advise lol.

If this cant be resolved the MultiEcuScan is a touch more user friendly (perhaps thats not right, it has a full setting page where you can set what cable you are using and where it is connected to the computer). You dont get all the features with free version but you can connect to the engine ecu, read and clear codes, and log upto 4 parameters. IAWScan should work though.

I haven't got as far as the car yet!! I read all the instructions (I mean, wtf, i am a man, I don't need instructions)
Apparently I have to use the downloaded driver for the cable then use the scanning tool.
I'll try again on Tuesday.
Thanks for your help and encouragement.

Right. Lap top to car, attach all cables, switch on ignition, open scan, select correct ecu, hit connect and an error message comes up 'unable to connect to COM0'

Tried troubleshooting the cable, no driver available apparently.

Help, please.

Re: Free 1994 Cinq, 900cc ..

Different laptop tried. Cannot recognise the usb device.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, still not recognised.

Tried to update driver from disc, says best driver already installed.

Seriously getting pissed off.

Re: Free 1994 Cinq, 900cc ..

Might not be much help, but i had similar issues setting up my ecu reading stuff when i had to do the cinq.

The problem for me was the vag-com cable. They're very hit and miss. I had to go through 3 different ones before i finally got one that hooked up.

That was kinda what i was suspecting. I've just ordered a slightly more expensive cable in the hope it works....

New cable worked..............eventually.

Cleared all the stored codes. Lambda won't clear, so I guess thats the problem.

New one ordered.
