This might well be a silly question.. but

I have me 1242 on the floor at the mo and also have an engine stand.

Ive no idea how to safely attach the engine to the stand

the bit that its meant to attach to on the stand has 4 moveable peg type bits.

was pondering removing the bracket off the back of the engine and then bolting the stand onto there?

You bolt it through the gearbox/engine threads. Gearbox bolts are too short on this (looks like from a Clarke or Draper engine stand) engine stand. They need to be a bit longer. Be carefule with the dowels as they might get stuck there and then difficult to get out.

I use usually longer bolts and some washers for the twi holes without a dowel.

You don't need to overtighten the bolts to keep the engine on.

As above, but make sure you use the holes at the top of the engine for the bolts, it can rest on the bottom lugs, unless of course, you are going to turn the block upside down to put the crank in.

cheers.

i need to go buy some bolts tomorrow then (y) and its gonna be easier without the flywheel on there methinks!

You need a lot of spacers and very long bolts to get the flywheel on. you will even have problems to get the rear crank seal casing on as it is.
