Right, after my other thread, I;d had all the splash guards and cambelt cover off checking for a leak from the water pump. Put them all back and now it won't start :(
Instead of firing it kind of back fires and blows the fuel back through the inlet. Only thing I have done is rotated engine slightly whilst removing the crank trigger wheel/front pulley, and it's raining so the engine has got slightly damp.

Can anyone think of anything obvious, I'v tried with no throttle and full throttle, it just splutters more with full throttle.

Ah, I've just read that it can be due to the bottom pulley not being put on properly and so the ignition timing is out. What marks am I looking for, for alignment? The crank trigger disc I'm talking about, just in case it wasn't clear.

The bottom pulley has a small hole in it between two of the three fixing holes. The crank shaft has a small pin which mates up with the hole. If you fit it in the incorrect position, the pin gets pushed into the crank but you can still see where it is.

I bought a poorly running Sei Sporting on ebay with this problem. The owner had swapped the coil packs over to get it running better but it was still very rough!

Just read your reply to the other thread. The water pump uses silcone sealant to seal against the block rather than a rubber seal. You'll need some of that when you change it. Regarding another leak, there are some core plugs behind the cover however my money is on the water pump.

When you change the pump and belt, it's recommend you replace the tensioner pulley too but the risk on the fire engine is low. To get the cambelt cover off, I find it easiest to remove the engine mount next to it, supporting the engine on a trolley jack. It's a pain with the engine mount in place.

Yeah, I found it pretty difficult to remove the lower cambelt cover earlier, I just ended up moving it out of the way. These things are a nightmare to work on, no space at all, dunno how people get on with they put the punto lumps in these
I know the hole you mean in the trigger disc, I'll align it tomorrow now, can't be bothered to take all the covers again in the rain!!

My 1242 did this whilst I was trying to initially start it after i installed it.

Turned out the coils were firing in the wrong order. Check your LT wiring and that the plugs are connected to the appropriate coils. The wiring diag in the back of the Cinq Haynes manual is wrong...use the one in the front (in the Ignition section)

Liam, no cambelt hasn't been changed recently, although it's nearly due so replacing water pump & belt at same time will tie in well with the service schedule.
Tom, switching coils round would do same as moving the trigger disc, as I put the disc back on 120 deg out I'll just change it back, although it's still raining :(

Yep, trigger disc was 120 deg out. Put back on with mark on crank pulley and trigger disc aligned, started up fine :)
