General Gear stick adaptors, what they do

Ive just taken the leather bit off thats round my gear stick with the intention of making a polished ally plate with a 'H' cut out into to go at the base of the stick

however, the stick as that cable that runs down the side. I'm guessing this is to do with putting it in reverse. Will these adapators that people keep talking about move the mechanism to the base of the stick so coming up i just have a simple gear stick, no cable

or would it take a lot more modding to do what i want?

it will take a bit of modding and bad language to re-locate it. Personally i wouldn't bother because when it comes to things like that, i start to worry and decide not to do it.

bugger indeed. Can't see why fiat opted to do this on the sporting cos it doesn't on the 899 S/SX

They robbed the gearbox from the Punto when they made the sporting (899 gearbox is a very old design), it's just a safety thing so you can't accidentally hit reverse when coming down from 5th.
If you try to fiddle the mechanism so it's pulled all the time, you won't be able to get 5thB)

Transplant the 6 speed box from the Punto Selecta (say Bo!) Dont know if thats a push down reverse though! You want a Ferrari style H-Gate??

actually, i want to eventually end up with a 6speed box and the 1242 mod.. so if they're not push down reverse that might be how i'll do it

Why dont you just buy the adapter and do the job properly? i was all for mashing mine up until a mate did it to his and buggered up reverse! the adapter only costs a tenner and makes life a whole lot easier! its an OMP thing, its on their website.. www.ompracing.it .. something like that anyway!

i had the impression that the 6 speed box comes from the ELX, but havent look much (not affordable mod atm!) so didnt want to correct

hippycinq - i'm not tryin to mod the gear knob. I want a polished ally H gate at the base of the stick, this isnt going to work with the cable for reverse running down the stick (wont fit, might snag and looks wrong) - but thanks anyway, it was actually thanks to one of your posts in another thread i looked at the adaptor..shame its not suited for this job tho

Got confused, a girl at work used to have a six speed punto and my grandad has a selecta. Cant imagine my grandad needing 6 gears!

Can just imagine him now, lol! He can only just manage to get his car into the garage without scraping it down the tree at the side of his drive (I've had to do my best to get the scratches out about twice now! ) I dont know how he'd cope with a normal manuel, let alone 6 gears!

The six speeder was fitted to a few mk1 55 sx and elx models, but not all of them. Not sure about mk2's, but do know they are like rocking horse poo second hand.
