Why oh why do the aftermarket rear wheel hubs not have nice cut outs?

My car failed it's mot with a frozen handbrake - nice and simple to fix, but the side that has frozen has a replacement hub on there. So the nice little cut outs are missing, and I had to bend the friction pads over on themselves to get them out. And there is no way to get the frozen elbow passed the hub! So that has got to come off to get the brakes back together!

As I was replacing the shoes I thought I'd better strip down the other side. Which has the OE hub. And took 15 minutes:cry:

So anyone know a good source of rear hub nuts? Google is failing me...

I know I am probably teaching granny to suck eggs but, don't forget to be carefull when you removing the hub that the inner race comes with the hub.

You can use the nut more than once, I know they say you should use it once. But they run at such a high torque that it is unlikely to come undone.

Agreed. I struggled once then decided just to take the damn hub off.

You could always remove the hub, grind the bit out to give the cutouts then refit.

I'd need to buy a grinder for that, and the balance would probably be all screwy.

What I did do was buy a 30mm impact socket and wound it off with a breaker bar. I was quite surprised that the bolt wasn't staked and it came loose with a 45cm bar. Must have gained few pounds lately. :)

So the elbow is out, soaked in plusgas and worked loose with a rubber mallet. And for any whippets out there Machine Mart do 1 metre breaker bars for £28. Which is going back tomorrow....

Speaking of rear hubs, i just replaced one of mine with a lucas unit. The center bore was a mm too small! This caused massive brake pulsation and vibration.
:(
