Mot time, after checking last years mot pass sheet, (only 3000 miles between) to see what it may fail on this year, “very rusty rear brake backplates” gets a mention. After getting the car up on axle stands and having a good poke around with a wire brush and a screwdriver. I found the drivers side rear brake backplate has got a 5p size hole in it and you can actually see the large spring in the brake drum through it……..not good. The other side looked fine so I rubbed it down and hammerited it. The rear bumper brackets were also very rusty with the original black protective paint just flaking off in strips, so rubbed them down and hammerited them too.
The rusty backplate must be a mot failure, what kind of job is it to put right and how much roughly would it cost. Is it a common problem, my car is a 96 Sporting with 42k.

Hi,
Yeah, rusty back plates are quite common, don, think they are expensive, about £16 from Fiat I think, just remember that you have to bleed the brakes after you have fitted the new back plate.... :)

Thanks
