if its just summet really obvious i appoligise in advance for my stupidity lol :I:I:I but it just got me a bit worried only had the car a week and it hasnt done that before

No need to worry! From your description it sounds like yuor cooling fan. Basically, when your driving you get a good steady flow of cold fresh air running through your radiator which cools the water in the radiator and then the (then) cold water flows around your engine, cooling it down. When your stuck in traffic, for instance, there isnt any cool air running through the radiator so the water cant cool down which then runs around your engine still quite warm, this will bring the temparature of the engine up. When the engine reaches a certain, predetermined, temparature the cooling fan will click on, this draws air through the radiator, cooling the water. The fan can often stay on for a while after you have stopped driving, especially in summer and especially with a Cinq as they all seem to run at quite a high temparature. Its perfectly normal with a Cinq, so dont worry! :D

P.S It isnt a stupid question, I know next to nothing about cars but you just pick things up as you go along!

or not in my case because the fan is buggered! anyone know how much they are to replace?

A trick I use to 'keep my cool' in traffic jams is to put the heater on full, fan on max setting and have the heat blowing through the car. It also helps my personal temperature control to have a window open. Doing this, the cooling fan rarely kicks in!

Cinqymum, I do that when Im nailing it! Was doing a 110mph-all-the-way-home-because-Im-in-a-rush run the other night and the temprature was fine, because it was cold and the air rushing through the engine was going at 110mph but when I came to slow down it flew up to about 90 degrees, so i slapped the heater on and got the windows open, cools it down a lot quicker!

Doing 110 in a Cinq is nasty, gives you an arm-ache after a few miles ;) My radiator is missing a whole row of cooling fins now, and leaking slightly, so a new radiator is on the cards methinks. I've heard you can wire up a switch to turn the fan on whenever your in traffic, regardless of what temp the engine is at. May have to look into it futhur, seen it on an Astra. As all i do is sit in traffic, it might just help.

Easy to do, all you need is two wires and a switch.

If you're posh, you want a relay too, and run the power supply for the relay coil from a supply that goes dead when you take the key out of the ignition - this way you can't forget and leave it on, or have that 'Did I do that, or did the car?' feeling when you walk away from it in the car park.:)
