Right, got a list for the infinate wisdom of your folks, all regarding the 1242 cinque I will be getting by the 23rd!

1) Sports cats, are these any good/will they work/how many lambda sensors does a 98 cinque sporting have?
http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/sportscatalysts.php

2) Manifolds - where do I get one that goes from a 1242 engine to the cat on a cinque? Does anyone do any easier fitting one? Who is recommended?

3) Porting heads - what is it? I understand polishing but will quite happily admit I dont know what porting is! Where can I get it done? How much? is it worth it?

Sure there will be more to follow!

Cheers

I can sort of help with question 3.

Porting involves reshaping and enlarging the inlet and exhaust ports to enhance the flow characteristics of the head. They are then polished. Any engine tuner should be able to port a head, and it is even posible to do it yourself. It would be better IMO to use a tuner who has experience with FIRE engines though.
The next step up would be to install larger valves. I heard that the valves are plenty big enough for a street unit anyway, so I'll reserve judgement as to whether it would actually be beneficial.

I don't know about FIRE heads, but mini tuners such as mini sport etc charge about £350 IIRC for a 'stage 3' head - ported/polished with larger valves, and closer to £300 for a 'stage 2' - port/polish, standard sized valves. These are based on exchange though.

If you're planning further tuning, e.g. cam change etc., then head work will only do good IMO.

Question 2-

Good luck with that!

You will either need to get a custom made one or find an old style Supersprint Manifold as they changed the design slightly and the new ones wont fit over the sump....

Let’s sort out a little miss understanding in porting and polishing heads. This is really not something to do yourself as you can inadvertently loss a lot of power by enlarging ports that don't need to be and polishing to much so as to loss the vortices created within the head to enable good combustion. You also do not need to go for larger valves unless you are really serious about racing your car on a track where low down torque will not be as needed as the valves are actually pretty big on the 1108cc head, I know cos I had my head done and it was closer to £400 I think without looking at the receipt and the guy who did it could easily have talked me into spending the extra on valves if he was less scrupulous.

A proper gas flowed head uses gas flow equipment to measure the flow characteristics gas passed through the head to optimize the head, this is a costly bit of it though there was a basic procedure in Retro Car mag a few issues ago on how to make your own for about £150.

There is also a 3 part series on gas flowing heads by Dave Vizard in Retro mag which goes into great depth what the procedures are in doing a head correctly.

apperently... the supersprint stainless manifold for the 1242 punto 60 will fit in the cento once u do the conversion as it is very similar if not exactly the same as the old style one for the 1108 which was the only manifold around that would fit under the sump after the conversion was done!

but i am not 100% sure about that, so dont buy one and then complain to me if it doesnt fit lmao :p

and as for porting and polishing.... if u are goin to go down that route, i would recomend a fast road cam as well to get the most out of the work on the head! (y)

I can't comment on FIRE motors, but I've had a couple of modified heads on Minis in the past and they made a massive difference (one was a Minisport Stage 4  ), but tuning it was easier being carb'd. Trip to local Mini bods rollers, the guy just took a file to the needle  to get the mixture right, £50 later and it was all done.

I would imagine on a fuel injected motor, a remap is a must to gain full benfit.

Are you sure mate?

Am sure they are different and still wont fit...

im not sure at all mate.... it was bought up the other day on the clubcento forum that they looked identical, but that could of just been a standard pic and they be totally different when they arrive?!?!?!?!?!

IIRC RobW was talkin about a new ansa one which MIGHT fit but he is not sure!

So you just ordered a 1242 manifold off clubecento?

Do tell how good it turns out!

just because it should fit, doesnt mean it will..... lol

i think that will be the best bet tho, gettin a stainless manifold suited for the engine and then hoping that it will fit, u can always sell it on after if it doesnt! (y)

Yeah I'll have to do that, get on well with the exhaust guy at a nearby garage so he may be in for a visit soon!

If anyone has any recommendations for 1242 manifolds (pref on a cinque) they would be greatly appriciated

The swirl characteristics are very important. Something I forgot to mention
It is possible to do a head yourself, it has been done before, but it isn't a project to consider lightly. A lot of research is needed and it would be best to practice on an old head. TBH it would be easier, and probably better to get a head professionally done.

Thought I'd seen something about FIRE valves being large enough for a street unit.
