Hi,

My sons Fiat Seicento 1.1 sporting 1108cc 2002 alternator has seized up solid.

How do I go about removing the alternator from the car? It a right pain.

I cannot get to the back to disconnect the wiring or get to all the bolts to remove the alternator from the car. There isn't enough room for my hands.

I also have to do the cam belt as well. With the alternator belt removed it makes a load squealing noise. If you have any pointers. (y)

Thanks

Jack the front of the car up and take the drivers side front wheel off. Inside the arch there's a black plastic trim piece behind the suspension upright. Take this off and you can get to the alternator bolts from there. ;)

Thanks for the advice. (y) I will have ago tomorrow.

Best tool for the alternator bolts is an 8mm ball end allen key. The "outside" of the bolts is hard to access.

Squeal won't be from the cam belt, but from the cam belt tensioner (poosibly, but unlikely, the water pump).

Seicento Technical Manual (factory manual) is in the Downloads, but for day - tp - day stuff, the Cinq Haynes manual is probably more useful.

Is the Allen key used to take the three bolts out that hold the alternator in place or to take the alternator apart?

Can I replace the bearings with new ones or will I need a new alternator?

Thanks

To get at the bolts, although, from memory, you'll need another allen key (need not be ball end) to get the pulley off (can't remember the size) if you're pulling it apart.

If you're lucky, noise may just be down to the bearings, which can be replaced.

Thanks for your help. (y)

I took the wheel off and there is no plastic cover just behind the spring. Should there be one?

There is a one piece wheel arch liner that goes either side of the spring. Will I have to take this off to do the cam/timing belt?

Is there a photo anywhere of the back of the alternator so I can see what wires need disconnecting and how? I can't visually see them from the wheel arch.

Thanks

There should be two wires. One held on with a 13mm nut (main live to the battery) and the other (black wire with a female terminal) plugged in.

When you get to and undo the 8mm allen bolts the alternator should drop enough to unplug and undo the two wires.

Make sure the battery is disconnected first if the alternator end of the wire shorts anywhere on the engine or body it could set fire to the car.

Alternator now off and second hand one for £19.75 on its way.

Thanks for all your help.
